The world’s most recognizable kaiju is coming to the small screen. After a successful trilogy that capped off with a fight against/team-up with King Kong, Godzilla is getting his own series on Apple TV+. The live-action series will be set in the same universe as the movie series from Legendary and Warner.
Apple describes the plot of the series as “Following the thunderous battle between Godzilla and the Titans that leveled San Francisco and the shocking new reality that monsters are real, the series explores one family’s journey to uncover its buried secrets and a legacy linking them to the secretorganization known as Monarch.” This description makes it sound almost like the plot of the series takes place sometime afterGodzilla: King of the Monstersbut beforeGodzilla Vs. Kong. That particular film was the last time audiences got to see Godzilla in action. By the end, Kong was ruling in the center of the hollow Earth, while Godzilla had departedback to the ocean after defeating Mechagodzilla.

The new series will be produced by Legendary Television and will be executive produced by co-creators Chris Black and Matt Fraction (Black will also serve as showrunner for the series). Fraction is perhaps best known for authoring the popularHawkeyecomic book series, the bulk of which was adapted forMarvel and Disney’sHawkeyestreaming series.Joby Harold (who will also be serving as executive producer and writer forDisney’s upcomingObi-Wan Kenobiseries), Tory Tunnell, and Toho Co. Ltd will also executive produce (with Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita executive producing for Toho).
It seems like the story within this new show will build onthe already established Monsterverse, which so far spans four films (the three Godzilla movies, as well as the prequelKong: Skull Island). So far no cast members have been announced, but it will be interesting to see if any of the familiar faces from the movies will be appearing in the show. These include Alexander Skarsgard, Kyle Chandler, and Millie Bobby Brown. An episode count has also not yet been announced.
This won’t be the first time that Godzilla has had his own television series.The first one aired all the way back in 1978, and was produced by Hanna-Barbera (the studio behind characters like Yogi Bear, The Flintstones, and Scooby-Doo). As was common at the time, the show featured a cute sidekick, this one a miniature version of the titular monster named Godzooky.
The second series came 20 years later, withGodzilla: The Series. Based on the American film adaptation from the same year, this series followed some of the characters from the movie teaming up with Godzilla to take on monsters that attacked New York City. Oddly enough, this idea would essentially form the basis of both 2014’sGodzillaandGodzilla: King of the Monsters.
