After months of lying to fans and hiding in plain sight, Andrew Garfield returned to play the role of the web-slinging hero inSpider-Man: No Way Home. Ever since the film premiered, fans have been asking Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios to complete hisThe Amazing Spider-Mantrilogy. However, Garfield has now stated that he doesn’t plan to return as Spider-Man anytime soon.

Garfield was one of three Spider-Men who appeared inSpider-Man: No Way Home, and he seems to have won the hearts of fans of the franchise around the world once again. Fans have been urging the studios and running social media campaigns to supportGarfield’s return as Spider-Man. However, the actor doesn’t seem too hopeful that he will be wearing the suit again.

While he attended the recently held 28th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, Garfield was asked byVarietyabout his potential return. As soon as he declined, he realized that he would be referred to as a liar by everyone for the “rest of [his] life.” He joked that he was “the boy who cried wolf.”Garfield was referring to lying multiple timesabout his involvement inSpider-Man: No Way Home. Any time he was asked in an interview leading up to the film’s premiere about his return, he blatantly lied about it, and later claimed to have enjoyed it at some point in one of his past interviews.

Garfield’s latest remark about not returning as Spider-Man has left many fans who were rooting forThe Amazing Spider-Man 3to be produced feeling disappointed. The Marvel Cinematic Universe’sTom Holland has also supported the ideaof a third standalone film for Garfield’s Spidey. However, it doesn’t seem like the studio has any plans for it, yet.

While Garfield lied about his involvement inSpider-Man: No Way Home, he wasfilmingtick, tick… BOOM!, the film that landed him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. Director Lin-Manuel Miranda toldVarietythat Garfield had been terrible at keeping it a secret. When the rumors started swirling, Miranda approached Garfield and asked him whether he was in fact playing Spider-Man. “It was the worst acting I’d ever seen him do,” he revealed. But, over time, Garfield did get better at lying, and sounded more convincing with every interview.
