Rogue Legacy 2from Cellar Door Games won critical acclaim thanks in large part to how fluid, rewarding, and challenging the platforming roguelike felt to play. Though theheirs are randomly generatedbefore starting a new run, players do feel a sense of agency as they can pick which character to move forward with.
Through exploration, they can build it closer to what they feel most confident with. Spells come in many shapes and sizes inRogue Legacy 2, and non-mage classes can take advantage of them despite wielding a sword over a staff.

8Fireball
The Fireball is described as a fiery blast that’s hurled at enemies. It costs fifty magic points to cast but will inflict the burn status effect on the target. Not only does it cause damage over time, but the last tick of the burn status effect will always register as a skill crit.

Melee weapon users know their one flaw is ranged fights and the Fireball spell provides a middle ground and can quickly inflict damage in a hurry. The fact that it does damage both on impact and over time makes it invaluable.
7Tesla Spike
In games, certain weapons or spells sometimes present themselves as much more difficult or obtuse than they are. When mostRogue Legacy 2players first try the Tesla Spike spell it’ll probably rub them the wrong way as it isn’t as straightforward as other spells.
It takes a bit of finesse to throw the Tesla Spike on a surface where it can hit enemies with its storm. The last tick of the storm skill crits enemies and it is well worth casting and using for just fifty mana points, but only if finesse is a part of said player’s play style.

6White Star
White Star is a powerful spell that can sadly also damage the caster of it. If this wasn’t the case then White Star would likely rank a bit higher amongRogue Legacy 2’s best spells. It always skill crits, but players need to effectively time their casting as White Star will float for a bit in the casted direction before exploding.

This means that enemies can dart out of the spell’s area of effect, and at the same time, the player can accidentally be knocked back into its damage range, andself-induced friendly fire is possible inRogue Legacy 2. The mana point cost of seventy-five per cast may seem like a lot, but its 4.5 damage modifier is the highest in the game by a wide margin, making the mana point cost worth it.
5Poison Bomb
Poison Bomb is a spell that’s rather self-explanatory thanks to its name, and will take 75 mana points to cast. The user holds to aim where the Poison Bomb will be shot, and upon contact will apply poison to the target.
Enemies can take three forms of damage as the impact, poison cloud formed, and poison status effect all deteriorate health bars. Some people consider poison to be the coward’s weapon, so it may not be for everyone, butRogue Legacy 2was built to customize the experience and by design, everything isn’t for everyone.

4Shockwave
Shockwave is a spell that doesn’t present itself as something damaging and game-changing, but in the right circumstances, players will understand why it costs 100 mana points to cast. After aiming the spell, players will fire a shockwave of blue projectiles, which can go through walls, and they’ll inflict damage on impact and destroy large projectiles.
Rogue Legacy 2’s mid-to-late-game bossesare where Shockwave shines, as it will become imperative that the player has a way to deal with projectiles they simply can’t dodge. The fact that it can be shot in any direction adds a level of versatility to the Shockwave spell.

3Fungal Spread
Fungal Spread sounds like the worst thing to put on toast, butinRogue Legacy 2, it’s a sneakily powerful spell that creeps up on foes. Its name comes from the fact that it’s a very aggressive pollination that spreads and corrupts the lungs of living beings.

It will apply a status effect known as spore burst which always registers as a skill crit. In many ways, Fungal Spread is the poisonous variant of the Fireball spell discussed at the top of this article, but its range and damage slightly outpace its comparative spell.
2Searing Shot
Searing Shot is a spell that feels as if the Fireball spell was upgraded to its maximum ability. Not only does it do a bit more damage, but it can also pass through walls, allowing the player to hit targets with a bit more safety.
Like Fireball, Searing Shot also applies the burn status effect, which skill crits on every one of its last ticks. Blue fire is always much cooler visually, so when comparing Searing Shot to Fireball it also has that going for it.

1Prismatic Spectrum
In addition to being the most visually pleasing and dynamic spell inall ofRogue Legacy 2, the Prismatic Spectrum spell also has a strong case as the game’s most powerful and useful spell as well. It may cost a staggering 100 mana points to cast, but the fact that it applies the frozen, burn, and spore burst status effects make the trade-off worth it.
The one drawback of Prismatic Spectrum is that it’s a relatively stationary casting that requires the player to be much closer to the target, but with practice this issue becomes irrelevant.

Rogue Legacy 2is available on PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
