While the game highlights some of the interesting hardware in the PS5 controller, one player is claiming that the game is incompatible with the system hardware. Simply put, a player claims the new game is bricking their PS5, and causing damage severe enough to warrant a replacement.

A post on Reddit highlighted the issue, as the player described their experience with thePS5 andCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.The player documented how the game damaged their system to the point where nothing will boot, and the system crashes without provocation. At first, the only game crashing wasCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold War,but after several attempts to boot the game, the console now refuses to load anything without crashing. The player’s post reports that the entire screen fills with flickering and glitching pixels before the console turns itself off and goes dead for several minutes.
The player’s warning is clear: “If Cold War is crashing your PS5, DO NOT PLAY IT.” In the post, he claims that the system’s GPU has been damaged, and so far, there has been no way to fix it. TheCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold Warplayersays they have tried factory resets, installing system software from a USB, and several other routine solutions to date.
Experience with the PlayStation 5 before this incident was described as “perfect” with everything going wrong when theybooted upCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold War.The player did, eventually, get in touch with an operator and provided a photo as of return tracking as proof that they have sent their PS5 back to Sony for a replacement.

IfCall of Duty: Black Ops Cold Waris damaging player hardware, it is currently unclear if this is a single case or a more widespread issue. Activision and Treyarch are aware of the issue based on the community manager’s comment stating, “We’re investigating all crashes across the game.” While this seems to be an isolated incident, many players are concerned that this is more than a simple crashing issue.
