Call of Duty: Warzoneis one of the most popular games in the world. Released in March 2020,Call of Duty: Warzonecaptured the battle royale genre, and surpassed an astonishing number of 100 million players over a year later.
There was a lot of uncertainty regarding thefuture ofCall of Dutyon PlayStationdue to Microsoft’s recent acquisition of Activision Blizzard. While the deal does not get completed until 2023, many fans believed it marked the end ofCall of Dutyon PlayStation consoles. According to Tom Henderson,Warzone 2is a true sequel toCall of Duty: Warzone, and it will only release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. He also states thatWarzone 2will act as a full reset, and will not be integrated with any previous title. Players will not be able to use previously obtained items, as it will be a completely new game for modern hardware. While every leak should be taken with a grain of salt, Tom Henderson has proven to be a reliable source on several occasions.
In a separate Tweet, Henderson notes thatWarzone 2is scheduled to release in 2023. Given that it comes out next year, it’s probably not surprising to seeWarzone 2leave PS4 and Xbox One behind. As it is solely designed around PC and next-gen consoles, players can expectWarzone 2to be a big upgrade over its predecessor.
Unfortunately, bothPS5 and Xbox Series X are still not readily available in stores, and it doesn’t look like supply will meet demand anytime soon. Customers have at least a year to get their hands on these new consoles beforeWarzone 2comes out, but it may not be enough. Still, users can choose to get an Xbox Series S as it’s relatively easier to find, and Microsoft may even decide to bundle some exclusiveWarzone 2items with the system.
The originalCall of Duty: Warzonewill likely retain a healthy player baseeven after the release ofWarzone 2. Many olderCall of Dutygames still have an active community, andWarzoneshould not be any different. However, players should not expectWarzoneto get new content as Activision will probably focus on making players transition toWarzone 2.
Call of Duty: Warzoneis available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
