Summary
Call of Duty: Warzoneplayers are having a discussion regardingCounter-Strike 2’s impressive new smoke grenades, and how they might work in the battle royale. WhileCall of Duty: WarzoneandCounter-Strike 2are substantially different games, there are some ideas that translate well between the two. One such feature isCounter-Strike 2’s incredible volumetric and responsive smoke. However, there’s some question regarding whetherCall of Duty: Warzonecould support the feature without a massive overhaul.
WhenCounter-Strike 2was revealed in March, even Valve seemed to understand that it didn’t need to reinvent a game that already works very well. As such, it focused on just a few key new features. The list includes new and improved maps, tick rate-less servers, a matchmaking overhaul, and perhaps most importantly new smoke grenade technology. Smoke grenades inCounter-Strike 2would create volumetric clouds, 3D objects identical from player to player, that would also react to gunfire in eyebrow-raising ways.

The impressivenew smoke technology inCounter-Strike 2has led to players of other first-person shooters to question whether the feature would work in their games.Call of Duty: Warzoneplayers are one such example, and recently started a conversation on the subject on Reddit. A post titled “WZ needs smoke like this” created a good amount of conversation with the community, though players are split on just how realistic it is forCall of Duty: Warzoneto be able to support the technology.
Almost all the top comments in the Reddit post are critical ofCall of Duty: Warzone’s ability to support volumetric smoke grenades like whatCounter-Strike 2is implementing. The top comment criticizes thelow tick rate onCall of Duty: Warzoneservers. Another comment recognizes that smoke would need to be handled server-side first. But most comments simply mock Activision’s willingness and ability to deliver the feature, saying something like, “Lmfao you ask Way too much for a small indie company.”
While many of theCall of Duty: Warzonecommenters are being cynicalto an exaggerated degree, they’re not entirely wrong. But they’re not entirely right, either.Call of Duty: Warzoneis built in a way to support dozens of players on a single map. It needs to be simple and fast, work on PC and consoles, and it must prioritize casual players alongside hardcore.Counter-Strike 2will be a game that is PC-only, streamlined for two teams of five, and places priority on hardcore players almost entirely.Warzonemay not be capable ofCounter-Strike 2’s smoke, but with good reason.
Just becauseCall of Duty: Warzoneisn’t likely capable ofCounter-Strike 2’s volumetric smokeright now doesn’t mean it can’t figure it out in the future. Now that Valve has shared its innovation, other developers can decide whether it makes sense for their games. It might not come soon, but perhapsCall of Duty: Warzonecould get volumetric smoke in another iteration or two.
Call of Duty: Warzoneis available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
