Capcom has givenResident Evilfans new hope thatResident EvilCode: Veronicacould be getting a remake at some point down the line. Even though it’s not a numbered entry in the long-running survival-horror franchise,Resident Evil Code: Veronicais an extremely important game story-wise, and was developed as the true successor toResident Evil 2. Despite this, Capcom has seemingly skipped overCode: Veronicain its line ofResident Evilremakes.

The firstResident Evilremake came in 2002 when Capcom remade the originalResident Evilfrom the ground-up with significantly enhanced graphics and new gameplay features. Nearly two decades later, Capcom moved forward with ahighly-successful remake ofResident Evil 2, which spawned remakes ofResident Evil 3andResident Evil 4. Chronologically,Code: Veronicatakes place beforeResident Evil 4, which is why some fans of the franchise were disappointed when theRE4remake was announced before aCode: Veronicaremake.

While Capcom still won’t commit to thepossibility of remakingCode: Veronica, it seems as though the company hasn’t ruled it out. Capcom was recently asked by a shareholder about only doing remakes for the numbered entries in the series. Capcom responded with a vague answer that it is “carrying out discussions regarding the future expansion of this series so it can be enjoyed by a wide audience.” This is far from a confirmation that aCode: Veronicaremake is in development, but it also means that Capcom is at least open to the possibility, givingResident Evilfans new hope that it will happen at some point down the line.

If Capcom does decide to produce a full-blownCode: Veronicaremake, such a project is likely years away. According to the latest rumors, the nextResident EvilgameisResident Evil 9, not a remake. This is good news forResident Evilfans who prefer completely original adventures to remakes, but it’s bad news for those wanting to reliveCode: Veronicawith improved graphics and modern quality-of-life features.

Some fans think that Capcom will continue ignoringCode: Veronicawith its remakes and insteadjump to aResident Evil 5remake next. This would make some sense as theResident Evil 5story follows up on some loose Wesker threads left byRE4, but it would be a shame asCode: Veronicais the game that brought Wesker back to begin with.

While aCode: Veronicaremake may or may not ever happen, at least the game is playable on modern platforms. TheHD remaster ofCode: Veronicais playable on the latest Xbox consoles, and the game is also playable on PS5 for those with a PS Plus Premium subscription.

The HD version ofResident Evil Code: Veronicais available on PS3 and Xbox 360.
