Summary

Cliff “CliffyB” Bleszinski sees a possibility of returning to theGears of Warfranchise if it were to receive a reboot that follows the same blueprint as theGod of Warseries. Bleszinski spoke about the likelihood of the reboot, along with a variety of other topics that mainly involve the developer’s history of projects, current achievements, and his work on theScrappercomic book.

Known for his work in theUnrealandGear of Warfranchises, Cliff Bleszinski has built a portfolio with Epic Games. He would later establish his own company, Boss Key Productions (founded in 2014). After moving on from Epic Games in 2012, theGears of Warseries continued with The Coalition. Since then, the series has gone in a different direction now that CliffyB isn’t behind the wheel for crafting the design for the games. With a new comic book on the way and other goals, CliffyB seems to have stepped away from the video game spotlight in favor of other creative ventures.

However, after speaking withComicBook.com, Bleszinski briefly spoke about the possibility of coming back to theGears of Warfranchise. When asked if Bleszinski could see himself returning to the world ofGears of Warthrough a comic book format, he came back by saying it’ll need a “little bit of a reboot, likeGod of Warhad.” This is about whatGod of Warreceived in 2018 with Santa Monica Studios and Sony. “Phil Spencer has my number, I’m happy to consult,” he added. His response then delved into an analysis of reading comments on YouTube with players reacting to Dom’s death inGears of War 3, an episode fromDoctor Whothat involves Vincent van Gogh, Patton Oswalt’s influence on entertainment, and political displays in comic book movies.

I believe Gears needs a little bit of a reboot, like God of War had, and I’ve always said, Phil Spencer has my number, I’m happy to consult. Gears will always be near and dear to my heart.

Based on Bleszinski’s response to ComicBook.com, it seems that he is merely interested in being a consultant if he were to come back to theGears of Warfranchise. Bleszinski is just about done with video game development, however. As he states elsewhere in the interview, he’s been pitching ideas on adapting hisScrappercomic book into an animated series. Bleszinski was asked if the idea began with a video game format in mind. While it was the initial approach, Bleszinski commented, “…if it becomes a video game, I’ll probably oversee a lot of it, but I don’t want to be in the trenches day to day, I’ve done enough sleeping under my desk.” He goes on to mention that the idea would make it an “awesome game that’s possibly cel-shaded style.”

TheGears of Warfranchise has been relatively quiet; its most recent installment was withGears Tacticsin 2020. Technically a spin-off of the series, the last main entry that players got to experience wasGears 5in 2019. It’s been a while sinceGearsfans were treated to a new installment, and it might be some time before any announcements are made.

For now, only rumors persist regarding the next title in theGearsfranchise, with ideas surrounding an open world to explore. Even if Bleszinski’s comments might not shine a light on the future of theGearsseries, fans can look forward to apotential film adaptation from Zach Synderwith Dave Bautista attached.
