It’s hard to believe that theDark Soulsseries has been around for nearly a decade. In that time, the franchise has influenced the gaming industry and community in ways that no one could have predicted. The term Soulslike was literally born fromDark Souls. However, one talented member of the modding community has created a mod forDark Souls Remasteredthat takes the difficult nature of the game an extra step further.

TheDark Soulsseries was built on the foundation of high difficulty spikes and limited checkpoints. This format broughtDark Soulsinto the ranks ofsome of the hardest RPGs ever created. Though, more than that,Dark Soulsinadvertently invented an entire subgenre of gaming called Soulslike RPGs.

Since the initial release ofDark Souls, many Soulslike games have started to pop up over the last decade. Games likeSalt and SanctuaryandHollow Knightthat feature high difficulty and fewer checkpoints, but also bring a lot of unique qualities and mechanics to the table. Since then, there has been a wide range of experimentation happening within the world of gaming, both commercially and within the community.

This most recent mod forDark Souls Remasteredis a prime example of this. A talented modder by the name of Grimrukh has created a new mod for the game titledThe Binding of Lordran. As the name of the mod implies, it borrows a lot of the same dungeon crawling, roguelike mechanics found inThe Binding of Issac, as well as the widely popularDead Cells.

Every time the player starts up the game, they will have to progress through levels with randomized enemy types in different locations. In addition, the player will also discover randomized loot, bosses, and other encounters. Though, what makes this mod so intimidating is the fact that if the player dies more than five times in a row, they’ll be sent back to the very beginning of the game, just like any roguelike game.

This should give hardcore fans ofDark Soulsthe extra challenge they crave.Dark Soulsfans have an active way of meeting the difficulty of the game head-on. For example, there was one tenacious player whobeatDark Soulsusing a homemade controller made out of bananas. In any case, hopefully, this mod will satisfy any and all fans ofDark Souls.

Dark Souls Remasteredis available now for PC, PlayStation 4, Switch, and Xbox One.
