Actor Dermot Mulroney has officially been cast inParamount’sScream 6. This will be the sixth film in the series and a direct sequel to the 2022 film.
Prior toScream 6, Mulroney had a lengthy career acting in film and television. He’s best known for starring alongside Julia Roberts in the 1997 romantic comedyMy Best Friend’s Wedding.His other recent film roles includeThe Family Stone,David Fincher’s true-crime thrillerZodiac,and Park Chan-Wook’sStoker.He is also known for starring in another horror sequel,Insidious: Chapter 3.Mulroney’s TV credits include Amazon Prime Video’ssmall screen adaptation ofHanna,as well as guest parts on HBO’s religious comedyThe Righteous GemstonesandArrested Development.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but according to Paramount, the sixthScreamfilm “continues with the four survivors of the Ghostface killings as they leave Woodsboro behind and start a fresh chapter.” According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mulroney is rumored to be playing a cop in the slasher sequel. Mulroney joins returning cast members Melissa Barrera, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Mason Gooding, and Jenna Ortega, all of whom were featured in the 2022 sequel.Actress Hayden Panettiereis also reprising her role fromScream 4.Screenwriters James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick will return to pen the script, while Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, from the filmmaking collective known as Radio Silence, will return to direct.
The firstScreamfilm premiered in theaters over twenty-five years ago. The slasher commentary was directed by horror movie legend Wes Craven, who is also known for creating theA Nightmare on Elm Streetfranchise. Starring Neve Campbell, Skeet Ulrich, Courtney Cox, Matthew Lillard, and David Arquette, the first film quickly became a horror classic and was best known for its self-aware and satirical approach to the slasher genre. The success of the first film spawned several sequels, including this year’s fifth sequel that was coincidentally also titledScream. Though the film was marketed as a relaunch, it is a direct sequel toScream 4and the first film in the franchise not directed by Craven, who passed away in 2015.
Similar to previous entries, the 2022Screamsatirizes elements of the horror genre, specifically the “whodunit” genre, as well as providing commentary onmodern horror fandomsand the Hollywood trend of legacy sequels and reboots. Released in January 2022, the film grossed more than $81 million domestically and $140 million worldwide.
Scream 6is scheduled to release in theaters on June 20, 2025.
