Summary
Destiny 2has been in a weird spot since the launch of the Lightfall expansion due to the many questions and expectations players had going into it and how little they walked away with, which wasn’t really helped by the seasonal storyline for Season of Defiance, no matter how good. The biggest gripe players had, and rightfully so, was that Bungie introduced a brand-new entity or artifact called The Veil, and at the time of Lightfall’s launch, only NPCs seemed to know what it was, while players were left in the dark. Season of the Deep fixed this, and a big lore revelation may very well have flown under mostDestiny 2players' radars.
Destiny 2’s Season of the Deep wasn’t and still isn’t without flaws, but it’s hard to deny the massive impact it has had in terms of lore on the game’s overarching story. OneSeason of the Deep cutscene fixedDestiny 2’s Lightfall issuessingle-handedly, all by revealing the origins of The Witness and explaining lore bits that were left untouched in the expansion. However, there were even more revelations after that, but they were all tucked away in a corner of Neomuna’s map for no one to see.

Destiny 2’s Maya Sundaresh and Chioma Esi Logs Explained
Recent statistics show that only a very small percentage of players gained access to the Veil Containment quest, and an even smaller amount actually managed to discover all of its hidden lore on a weekly basis. The main problem is that this mission is only available after players completeDestiny 2’s Unfinished Business Exotic quest, which takes them around Neomuna and the Sol System and then to the Black Garden. This is when Veil Containment is unlocked, but there’s another problem with this mission - it contains audio logs added on a weekly basis.
This means that not only players can struggle to discover that the mission even exists, but they have to actively go back to that same remote corner ofDestiny 2’s Neomunamap every week to listen to all the new logs. These are vital pieces of lore when it comes to understanding what The Veil is and what it does, with it apparently being a paracausal entity similar to The Traveler that acts as a collective consciousness. While this is in and of itself a massive revelation, there’s a potentially even bigger one that came with the eighth week’s audio log from Chioma Esi.
Chioma Esi is the narrator in these logs, and she was part of the Ishtar Collective from before the Collapse, after which she and her wife Maya Sundaresh went to Neptune. They eventually discovered The Veil and became the founders of the present-day Neomuna, and both characters were well-known names to players familiar withDestiny 2lore. Chioma Esi’s logs show that her wife Maya was following an obsessive pattern where she went to great lengths to learn more about The Veil and the Vex. In the eighth log, Chioma reveals that amidst her experimentation with Exo minds, Maya has created an Exo copy of herself called Lakshmi-2.
While Lakshmi-2 hasn’t always been a prominent character, she became a key one inDestiny 2’s Season of the Splicer due to her obsession with the Vex and her lack of acceptance toward Eliksni. But because she has been around for years and years, discovering that she was actually an Exo with the voice and memories of Maya Sundaresh may very well be the biggest revelation out of Lightfall - both for the past of the game and its future. However, sinceVeil Containment inDestiny 2is barely visible, many will likely miss the news.
Destiny 2is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
