AsDestiny 2’s next season approaches, Bungie has been building hype by rolling out major changes likeallowing players to change armor affinity. In a recent update, the developer also announced another highly-requested change to the armor mod system, which will make armor mods from different seasons compatible with one another.
While grinding has always been a part ofDestiny 2,as the Light Grind shows,Bungie has only worsened the issue by not allowing armor from different seasons to slot seasonal mods. Although the developer did re-release past loot to make it compatible with the newest gear, this system forced players to grind even more, and generated even more frustration. However, Bungie’s upcoming approach to armor mods claimed to resolve this issue.

But according to a Reddit update post from the developers, this solution is not as all-encompassing as players might think. While players' Seasonal Mod slots can now use mods from different seasons, a Bungie community manager clarified that this backward compatibility has a three-season limit relative to the armor’s launch season. So, an armor piece from Season of the Undying, for example, can slot Undying Mods, Season of Dawn Mods, and Season of Opulence Mods but it will not be able to slot next season’s mods. The manager also noted that this change would be retroactive to all the gear players have collected thus far.
In the past, Bungie claimed that it had heardDestiny 2usercomplaints about armor, but would not address them immediately. While the developer has clearly revisited the issue since then, players have not been satisfied by its attempts to resolve the problem. Some Reddit users accused Bungie of “diluting” the problem while others pointed out that this new system might be more confusing to newcomers.
While Bungie was right to revisit and work on issues in the game, its proposed solution only feels like a half-measure. Bungie has not explained why armor slots can’t be universal with all mods and without limitation. There is likely a bigger plan on the horizon for mods and armor but this is merely a good first step and shows Bungie still has a lot to figure out. In the meantime, the studio may have its hands full withgame-breaking bugs that have causedDestiny 2server rollbacks.
Destiny 2is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One. Season of the Worthy begins July 30, 2025.
