Raids bosses inBorderlands 2were fun and convenient, whereasBorderlands 3’s Takedowns are more so for those wanting to put their skill limits to the test. Sure,Wotan the Invinciblecan be easily defeated with the proper loadout, but the hoard of enemies beforehand make players really strive for that win.Borderlands 2raid bosses could be challenging but were more or less designed as a way to grind for loot against a simple, straight forward, and fun boss battle. As such, and especially with many clamoring for traditional raid bosses to return, there’s more than enough room for both inBorderlands 3.

After all, Takedowns can focus on intense, sprawling gameplay, while raids are still more focused and honed in on a giant boss alone. It perhaps says something that Gearbox didn’t just redefine raids to be Takedowns, so the possibility seems to be there. Plus, there are plenty of rumors that show space, room, and ideas for traditional Borderlands raid bosses that could make their way intoBorderlands 3.

Hemivorous the Invincible

The most recent comes in light of the upcoming Guns, Love, and Tentacles: The Marriage of Wainwright and Hammerlock DLC, where it is revealed that the latter left finding a wedding planner to the former because he was huntingHemivorous, a Varkid Queen. Since this information comes straight from Gearbox, it is confirmed to be in the game to some extent, but there is the question of whether or not this truly means aBorderlands 3raid boss or not. It would certainly be welcome, but at the same time, Hammerlock is a hunter.

Hunting rare creatures is what he does, so while it stands to reason that this could be a raid boss (as most have been connected to him somehow), it could also just be another rare enemy introduced with the upcomingBorderlands 3DLC. There could be a side quest, which admittedly sounds more likely, where players need to help Hammerlock hunt down certain creatures for wedding decorations or the like, so while it remains to be seen, this can be filed under “leaked - confirmation pending.”

Korilax the Invincible

Going back further, though, there have been any indications that raid bosses would play some role in Borderlands 3 since the beginning. There is a door in Ascension Bluff that cannot be opened and has been that day since day one, but when someone managed to glitch their way into the arena, they discovered it looks very much like pre-release footage that showed off a presumable raid boss. The nameKorilax the Invincibleis taken from another bit of dialogue from Sir Hammerlock, so Korilax and Hemivorous have that in common.

However, it’s worth mentioning that both are said to be giant Varkids, which doesn’t sound likely. Perhaps there was a name change or something, but that doesn’t seem likely either. Either way, withHammerlockplaying a big role in the upcoming DLC and his relationship with the raid bosses, this poses a very powerful question.

Will Borderlands 3 Raid Bosses Actually Return?

In short, not only does it seem possible, it seems likely. There’s far too many clues that it could happen inBorderlands 3, and as aforementioned, it would work even in conjunction withBL3’s Takedowns. There’s these two raid bosses which are mentioned by Hammerlock, there are more doors than just Ascension Bluff that could lead to raid boss arenas, and there’s the pre-release footage of a giant Varkid boss.

It is somewhat surprising not to see it on theBorderlands 3spring 2020 roadmapand more concerning that nothing has actually dropped yet, but at the same time, these could easily be connected to the story DLC. For now, fingers crossed that these rumors pan out eventually, perhaps starting with the upcoming Guns, Love, and Tentacles DLC.

Borderlands 3is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
