There would be noGod of Warseries without Kratos. There would not be a reboot series with him and Atreus. They are central to the plot once again in this sequel,God of War Ragnarok, as the father and son duo ventures into more bleak territory. Kratos has his moments as he is trying harder than ever not to be a mean vengeful god.

The same is true for Atreus as he has grown up and is less fussy, but he has issues inGod of War Ragnaroktoo. Are they among the top characters in the game or do others kick them out for being more fun? Let’s discuss the cast with full spoilers.

8Ratatoskr

Ratatoskr plays a small role in the game but every moment with him is gold. He first appears as Kratos and Atreus are making their way for Alfheim. He jumps on Kratos’ back and freaks him out as anyone would. Kratos doesn’t smash the squirrel to pieces as he would in the old games though and that’sa big change.

Even in a world filled with giant snakes and undead monsters, a talking fuzzy squirrel with an eyepatch is quite the sight. All of his exchanges after that are fun, especially whenever a new persona of his gets unlocked like Bitter.

7Angrboda

Angrboda is a greatally for Atreussince she is the first female character his age he has met. Not only that but she is a giant as well. Atreus is a bit confused at first since he appears in her land in a dream. She’s not quite sure what to make of him yet either since she has been seemingly alone for some time.

It’s a bit unfortunate she goes away in the game after their initial meetup though. She loses confidence after Atreus leaves but somehow finds it again in his absence. It would be nice to see how this journey progressed in DLC or something.

6Odin

Odin is a great villain to hate inGod of War Ragnarok. On one hand, he seems like he is telling the truth. He wants peace with Kratos, but in exchange, he forbids them fromlooking for Tyr. Even though Kratos doesn’t care about Tyr, he refuses the peace anyway.

Odin has a way with words where anything he says will get people to do the opposite. It’s all according to his plan. In the end, he wasn’t the worst villain in the series. He was just selfish in his pursuit of world knowledge which hurt the people he loved in his path.

5Heimdall

Heimdall is an even worsejerk than Odinand that’s saying something. Part of the reason is that Heimdall is so smug about everyone other than himself and Odin. His overconfidence is what gets him into trouble though.

He gets his comeuppance via Kratos in their climactic battle and it is glorious. The journey to his death was excruciating at times because his words could be like nails on a chalkboard. He’s a good kind of evil though because it gives fans someone to root against.

4Brok

Brok is a free-minded indivisible who will speak the truth no matter what. He’s the polar opposite of his brother Sindri who’s too nice sometimes to a fault. He won’t sugarcoat anything but that doesn’t mean Brok doesn’t have a soft side.

One of the funniest scenes is when he gets all nervous about meeting Lady, who is an aquatic mermaid-like forger that lives in his home world. There were a lot of questions that were left unanswered concerning Brok’s backstory inthe 2018 rebootbut they get addressed here to a tragic degree.

3Sindri

Sindri has had a wild journey from the start of the first game in this reboot series. He was estranged from his brother and had a bit of a cleanliness streak about him. He was endearing though, often with some sage words of advice or at least a good line to lighten the tension.

He has some great quotes inGod of War Ragnaroktoo, but then things take a turn for the dramatic. Sindri becomes not as fun to be around but that’s what makes him such a powerful character. There’s tragedy behind those happy-go-lucky eyes and Atreus and Kratos are partly to blame.

2Mimir

Mimir was one of the best characters from the first reboot game. He added so much more context to quests, puttingother open-world RPGsto shame. The banter between Kratos and Atreus could be cute sometimes, the Mimir added that extra boost that took that game to new heights.

The only problem was that he was a late addition to the game, so players didn’t have as much time with him. This time around he is there nearly every time Kratos goes on an adventure, which is amazing.

1Freya

Freya, at first, seemed like an ordinary witch of the woods in the 2018 game. It was a surprise when it is revealedshe was a godand that was married to Odin on top of that. That game ends with her swearing revenge on Kratos and thenGod of War Ragnarokopens up with her chasing him through the woods.

Thankfully, the two make up their differences and Freya even becomes a companion. Given the nature of her story, it wouldn’t be hard to imagine Freya becoming a playable character if there is another game in this series. Her quest for revenge is an inspiring story for abused women everywhere and she got the blood she so rightfully deserved.
