Summary
A gamer recently shared a photo of their grandfather playingBattlefieldand the setup he uses to play it. The whole thing is rather wholesome, and a nice reminder thatno one is ever too old to enjoy playing video games.
It’s a common stereotype that gaming is a hobby enjoyed solely by children, teenagers, and adults in their 20s and 30s, thanks in part to marketing trends as well as the fact that the most prominent gamers tend to be in that age range. That, of course, couldn’t be farther from the truth. Plenty of people game well into their golden years, and some, like“Skyrim Grandma” Shirley Curry, have even managed to gain sizable followings sharing their gaming exploits online.

One such gamer was highlighted recently by Reddit user Zestyclose_Oil4680, that being their 79-year-old grandpa. In the photo they shared on theBattlefieldsubreddit, their grandpa can be seen playing throughBattlefield 5using a setup consisting of a laptop plugged into an old TV monitor. Not only that, Zestyclose stated that their grandpa had also put his gaming setup together himself, expressing amazement that their near-octogenarian grandparent was capable of doing so.
Folks on Reddit generally had nothing but nice things to say about Zestyclose’sgamer grandpa, calling him things like “awesome” and “a legend,” and commended him for gettingBattlefield 5running on an outdated hardware. Some even commented on his choice of game, mentioning how wild it is that he was alive when World War 2, the conflictBattlefield 5is based on, was actually going on.
TheBattlefieldfranchise has been going through a bit of a rough patch in the last few years. AfterBattlefield 5launched to somewhat mixed reviews, 2021’sBattlefield 2042debuted to a much more negative reception due to unwelcome gameplay changes and a plethora of bugs at launch. That said, developer DICE has gradually been righting the ship in the time since.New updates forBattlefield 2042continue to be added to improve the experience for fans who have stuck with it, and it looks like that will be the case for the foreseeable future.
As of this writing, it remains to be seen what DICE has in store forBattlefieldbeyond2042. In the meantime, fans looking to get their large-scale tactical shooter fix outside the franchisecan check outBattleBit Remastered. The indie shooter launched in early access recently, and despite swapping outBattlefield’s photorealistic graphics for visuals more akin toMinecraft, it has been attracting fans with its 254-player lobbies and features like proximity chat, becoming one of the most popular games on Steam in the process.
