GR: What was it like to reunite with Don Hall almost a decade afterBig Hero 6was released?
Scott Adsit:We always stayed in contact because ofour Baymax bond. We’ve always been very friendly and chat whenever we can. He told me about this [the series] at his birthday party, one or two years ago. He said, “Keep it under your hat, but I have an idea to get the big guy back on screen.” He wouldn’t tell me what it was, but he said, “Don’t ruin your voice between now and then.”

I was very excited. Any chance to get on the mic and be Baymax is a thrill because I love the character so much. I love how people respond to him. Knowing it was Don who was going to shepherd the whole thing—with the full CGI beauty that the movie had—was just like coming home.
GR: Throughout the series, the viewers meet many new characters. It’s the way the show flows. What character are you most excited for fans to meet?
Adsit:Probably, Kiko, an older woman who Baymax comes to realize is afraid of water. He tries to help her overcome her fear, but it is not quite that simple. The actress, Emily Kuroda, is brilliant, and she’s animated so well that she seems like a real person and a cartoon at the same time. I love the way the two of them interact.
GR: I loved episode three which is the Sofia episode. What was your reaction when you got that script in your hand?
Adsit:I cried. It was beautiful to read. It was very simple and straightforward. It approaches the subject of a girl getting her first period as a normal part of life and something that she has to addressed. It’s just something that happens and there’s a way to handle it with grace, or any way they want to handle it, and I found that really beautiful.
GR: Baymax is a very algorithmic character, but you add this level of friendliness and personality. Do you get toplay with any improv?
Adsit:The scripts are so well written that there’s no real need for it, but there’s a little room here and there, often with the noises Baymax makes. With this series, we were recording by ourselves in a booth, so I’m not interacting with my other scene partners. All of my improv training comes from reacting to people and then getting their reaction to my reaction. Every time we go in the booth, we still find new things to add that aren’t in the script. It’s more ad-libbing than improvising.
