Summary
Guild of Darksteelwill apparently be making a comeback on the PS4, according to a newly surfaced classification listing. The PlayStation port of theside-scrolling RPGwas originally announced in September 2020, only to be canceled come June 2021.
Made by Belgian indie developer Igor Sandman,Guild of Darksteelis an action role-playing game that tasks the player with exploring the city of Ravenrock and its immediate surroundings with the goal of uncovering an evil plot concocted by its titular guild. The APRG was one of the manyindie games that released for the Nintendo Switchand PC in 2021, having reached the eShop and Steam in July of that year.
And while its PlayStation port was canceled two and a half years ago, it would appear that the game will make its way to Sony’s consoles after all. That’s according to a recently published PEGI rating describing a PS4 and (another) Switch version of the side-scrolling RPG. As first spotted by Gematsu, the classification appears to hint at a physical release ofGuild of Darksteelbeing on the horizon. The PEGI rating also reveals that this release is being handled by Red Art Games, a Metz, France-based publisher. Texanindie game publisher Digeratiwas previously in charge of the RPG’s eShop and Steam launches.
Although the boxed version ofGuild of Darksteelwill thus apparently launch years after the original game had its digital debut, that gap between releases matches Red Art’s overall modus operandi. Namely, the French company historically treated many indies likeMayhem Brawlerand thecritically acclaimedArise: A Simple Storyto delayed physical releases.
While the freshly surfaced PEGI listing indicates that the new version ofGuild of Darksteelwas already released on November 24, that doesn’t seem to be the case, as Red Art’s website doesn’t contain any mention of the game just yet. The boxed version of the game will likely retail in the ballpark of $20, which is on the lower end of what Red Art’s physical releases go for. For reference, the Steam and eShop versions of the game are currently priced at $12.99 and $14.99, respectively.
ShouldGuild of Darksteeltruly be treated to a physical release for the PS4 like this newly surfaced PEGI classification suggests, it stands to reason that the game will also find its way to the PS Store. The delayed arrival of its PlayStation port won’t necessarily inhibit its success on Sony’s consoles, whose owners have repeatedly proven they’re interested in high-quality 2D action platformers in the vein ofShovel Knight,Super Meat Boy, andCeleste.
