The world clearly can’t get enough ofThe Suicide Squaddirector James Gunn, and it looks like the masses won’t have to wait long before they can enjoy more of his uniqueDCstylings. The cast has been announced for his upcoming animated seriesCreature Commandos, and it looks to be as eclectic as fans have come to expect. After offering only a fewupdates onCreature Commandosas of late, Gunn now has the biggest one yet.DChas announced the voice cast for the rather eccentric-looking series, and it’s packed to the King Shark gills with big stars from even bigger shows (note: the cast, unfortunately, does not include King Shark, but the pun was too good to pass up). Heavy-hitting series likeStranger Thingsand evenGame of Thronesare represented here, so fans know they’re in for something good. Plus, Gunn is involved, so fans also know they’re in for something weird.RELATED:DC: 10 Strongest Creature Commando Characters in the ComicsColliderreports that theCreature Commandoscast will includeGame of ThronesandObi-Wan Kenobistar Indira Varma as Bride of Frankenstein, billed as the show’s protagonist. She’ll be joined byDavid Harbour ofStranger Thingsfame, who fittingly joins up as the voice of Eric Frankenstein, the actual “monster” from Mary Shelley’s genre-conceiving novelFrankenstein. It won’t all be classic horror characters, however. Frank Grillo is here as well, jumping from his time at Marvel Studios as Brock Rumlow to DC to play Rick Flag Sr., whose son Rick Flag Jr. (Joel Kinnaman) was seen in Gunn’s 2021 hitThe Suicide Squad.
Also included in the cast is Zoë Chao, recently seen inPhil Lord and Christoper Miller’sThe Afterparty. She’ll voice the frog-like scientist Nina Mazursky. Meanwhile,Firefly’s Alan Tudyk, who remains a veteran of voice acting spaces, plays the radioactive Dr. Phosphorus.Borat Subsequent Moviefilmstar Maria Bakalova is also here as Princess Ilana Rostovic. But the show will also feature some familiar voices, including Sean Gunn reprising his role as Weasel fromThe Suicide Squadas well as also playing military android G.I. Robot. Viola Davis is back as the always-intimidating Amanda Waller from the same film. Finally, Steve Agee will return as John Economos fromThe Suicide Squadand the surprisingly fantasticPeacemakerseries.
As the first animated series in the currentDC Universe under Gunn and Peter Safran,Creature Commandosfeatures a familiar story focused on a team of misfits and “monsters” working together. After the success ofThe Suicide Squad, it makes sense that such a project would inspire the adaptation of similar ideas. The series will be 7 episodes long, with Gunn reportedly writing each of them. If nothing else, that’s got to raise a few approving eyebrows.
At the moment, there is currently no release date forCreature Commandos. But given the folks involved, it will likely be very much worth whatever wait it ends up invoking on its eventual fans. It’s always nice to see more of that slightly uncomfortable fun that Gunn is known for.
