For Kanye West, the past few years have been an absolute rollercoaster, between releasing new music, working on his fashion brand Yeezy, and becoming a candidate in the US presidential election withsupport from Elon Musk. With the multi-hyphenate bidding to become the next leader of the free world, it appears that West is looking towards video games as a source of inspiration.

West appeared on the latest episode ofThe Joe Rogan Experiencepodcast where, for nearly three hours, he spoke on topics concerning his US presidential candidacy, his faith, and his artistry. At 1:36:50 of the podcast, the rapper, who haspreviously expressed his desire to meet Hideo Kojima, began talking about the relationship between games and real life.

“We’re in the movie, we’re inGrand Theft Auto,” said West, “there’s just too many things that align… what we can do is be like if yourGrand Theft Autocharacter just started redesigning the world, his self, like painting his own world. We have this opportunity to make life as fun as these second lives.” West later stated his belief that he could make real life as “imaginative” and “awesome” as games.

It is interesting that West expressed these views onThe Joe Rogan Experience, considering Rogan himself has previouslycriticized video games as a waste of time. However, Rogan did not press further on this topic.Grand Theft Autowas not the only gaming reference West made on the podcast, with the producer comparing his thought process to jumping on clouds inSuper Mario Bros.

West has maintained a strong relationship with gaming over his career, from samplingStreet FighterIIIon his 2016 singleFather Stretch My Handsto nearly naming an album after the TurboGrafx-16 console. When West announced on Twitter in July earlier this year that he would be running in the 2020 presidential election, the officialTwitter account ofCyberpunk 2077repliedto the announcement.

Back in 2016,West announcedOnly One, a game based around guiding his mother, Donda West, through her ascent into heaven. Donda West passed away in 2007, with the singleOnly Onebeing dedicated to her.
