Marvel’s Midnight Sunsdebuts the fully customizable Hunter protagonist, and through them players are able to meet and befriend iconic Marvel characters.Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ Hunteris integral to the game’s narrative given they are the child of Lilith and have unique demon-hunting abilities. In this way,Marvel’s Midnight Sunsfeels original enough to hold its own while being an established part of the Marvel canon’s rich history in comic books.

Marvel’s Midnight Sunsdoes well not to dwell on Marvel iconographythat would be gratuitous. Instead, characters are well-rooted in the comic book source material, and events that have taken place in the past are sometimes brought up to add layers to their development. There are many subtle references to events from the comics, but two compelling Hero Requests in particular allow players to weigh in on Marvel’s Civil Wars.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ Hero Requests Are Worth Their Unique Rewards

Marvel’s Midnight Suns’ Hero Requests range from instantaneous to spanning multiple days, but their rewards are often worthwhile. Hero Requests appear as question mark speech bubbles over characters’ heads as opposed to the heart and exclamation point bubbles that players see for hangouts and other conversations.

Most Hero Requests will simply ask players to choose between two different rewards, and these rewards are chosen based on a dialogue selection based on the question asked. These questions are irrelevant toMarvel’s Midnight Suns’ narrative, there are no detrimental choices, so they are only a vessel for players to receive one of two rewards.

Some Hero Requests have more particular requirements for completion. Some request that players take a certain character on a combat mission or upgrade one of their cards, for example, which could take multiple days. Yet these requests can expire after a number of days, making them more important if the rewards are great.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns Lets Players Choose Their Sides in Each Civil War

“Civil War” and “Civil War 2” are two of Marvel’s biggest comic book events, pitting different halves of the Marvel canon against each other in defense of staunch ideologies. Both events featured Iron Man, who is characteristically opinionated to a fault.

The first Civil War had Tony Stark clash with Steve Rogers’ Captain America over whether superheroes’ actions should be regulated by the government, which also meant that no superhero could have a secret identity or act independently. In this Civil War, Tony was on the side of government regulation.

The second Civil War saw Tony clash withCarol Danvers’ Captain Marvelover whether individuals who are known to commit crime in the future should be persecuted alaMinority Report. In this Civil War, Tony was on the side of being innocent until proven guilty, arguing that people are capable of change, so precognitive suggestions should not be enough to incriminate any innocent person.

Fans may have had their own arguments about who was right or wrong based on their own moral compass, soMarvel’s Midnight Sunsactually gives them the chance to say which sides they would be on through Hero Requests. The question of whom to side with on each issue is left to players - for the first Civil War controversy, either Iron Man or Captain America will receive six points of friendship if sided with.

Meanwhile, the second Civil War controversy rewards players with either three points of friendship for Captain Marvel and 10 points toward the Hunter’s resilience if Carol is selected, but three points of friendship for Iron Man and 10 points toward the Hunter’s willpower if Tony is selected. Players can choose their answers purely based on what they want their stats to look like inMarvel’s Midnight Suns’ social RPG, but it is still great to see these deep comic roots be presented for player to leave their own stamp on.

Marvel’s Midnight Sunsis available now for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, with PS4, Switch, and Xbox One versions coming later.
