Despite the series beginning in the late 80s, it was 1998’sMetal Gear Solidon the PlayStation that really made a name for it and creator Hideo Kojima. Considered to beone of the best 3D games of the 90s, the PS entry is a beloved classic, especially among fans of stealth games. As a result, many are still playing the quarter of a century old title after all this time, and there are even some who are committed to setting new speedrunning records.

That’s exactly what user SoapySam did recently, when they completedMetal Gear Solidin a record-breaking time of 36:23. The video was uploaded to Speedrun.com and has been placed in the number one spot. The most impressive thing about this run is that SoapySam was able to accomplish it while playing the game on Extreme, the highest difficulty setting. The game was completed under the “Any%” category, which means the player can get to the end by using exploits, bugs, and other methods that aren’t considered cheating in order to shave off precious seconds.

Upon completing the speedrun, SoapySam can be heard giving an elated “Yes!” as the final time is shown onscreen. Asone of the best espionage video game seriesout there, theMetal Gear Solidentries often encourage players to be methodical and careful, take time to scope out areas, and stealthily move through maps undetected. However, in this instance, as with all speedrunning attempts, the aim was to get to the closing credits as quickly as possible, and that’s exactly what this user has done while also setting a new world record.

With manyspeedruns now being done ofElden Ring, a game that’s only been out for a couple of months, it shows just how on top of things the speedrunning community at large is. It takes an enormous amount of time and dedication to do frame perfect playthroughs. And over the years, many players have turned the act of doing runs at breakneck speed almost into an art form.

There are a lot ofgames that new speedrunners can attempt, and with the Awesome Games Done Quick events that take place, it’s possible to turn it into an act of kindness as players and viewers donate to worthy causes. In general, what SoapySam has achieved is very impressive, especially given they were on the hardest difficulty, and it begs the question of how long they will remain at the top before someone challenges the new record.
