While Tom Cruise has expressed his loyalty and faith in the franchise several times recently, this time, the film’s director Christopher McQuarrie took over the mic to share what the upcoming years of the franchise might look like.
The firstMission Impossiblefilm premiered in 1996, and it followed American government agent Ethan Hunt, portrayed by Cruise, as he becomes the prime suspect in a murder case, which sends him on a journey to uncover the truth without his organization’s support. Since then, the franchise has released five subsequent films, solidifying Cruise as an A-list celebrity and a pop culture icon. Similarly,theMission Impossiblefranchisehas become a cult classic and the 18th-highest-grossing film series of all time, earning over $3.5 billion worldwide. Now, over two decades later, with a seventh installment on the way, fans are curious to learn about Hunt’s upcoming years.

Mission: Impossible— Dead Reckoning Part Onewill be released in July 2023. However, the film’s world premiere occurred in June in Rome’s landmark Piazza di Spagna. The event was attended by Cruise, McQuarrie, and the rest of the film’s cast. The stars took their respective pictures on the red carpet –and with fans– and engaged in the customary round of interviews. When it was time for McQuarrie, who has directed the past threeMission: Impossiblefilms, the question of the franchise’s future did not hesitate to arrive. “Mission: Impossible will end when the audience is no longer entertained,” he toldThe Hollywood Reporter.
The director then explained that they filmedMission: Impossible 7at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, so coming back to a city filled with fans thrilled to see their work, “it fills me with joy… I’ve never felt more happy to be stuck in traffic!” As for Cruise, the actor reflects on his experience playing the character and how different the making of this new installment was. The actor says he studies the character and thetech used to bringMission: Impossible 7to life. “I’ve always wanted to make films and travel the world, to have this opportunity, and that’s what I want to keep doing,” Cruise said.
The eighth installment of the series,Dead Reckoning Part Two, will be released on July 16, 2025. Part one will follow Hunt (Cruise) and the IMF team as they track down a dangerous weapon that, if put in the wrong hands, can have devastating effects on humanity.
