There are many skills from players to choose from inMonster Hunter Rise. One such skill that players may wanting to try fitting into their build is the bludgeoner skill. This skill affects damage as a weapon’s sharpness decreases, but players need to be aware of a few things before putting this skill into use, mainly how sharpness works inMonster Hunter Rise.
How Sharpness Works
Each non-gunner weaponhas a sharpness level. The sharpness of a weapon is rated by six different colors. Those colors are, from dullest to sharpest: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, white. As future updates come into play, previous games' purple level sharpness may return, but for now, it’s just the six. Some weapons may have a specific color that lasts longer than others. For example, a weapon might have a long bar of green sharpness, but no blue sharpness while another does have a little bit of blue sharpness, but has a small amount of green sharpness. The first weapon will maintain green sharpness longer than the second one, but will never receive the benefits of blue sharpness.

As for those benefits, every color of sharpness modifies the standard or raw damage of a weaponas well as it’s elemental damage. The raw damage modifiers are as follows:
Meanwhile, the elemental damage modifiers are:
Essentially what this means is that at lower levels of sharpness, the weapon will actually have its damage value decreased. While on the flipside, higher sharpness levels will increase damage. Not only does the damage decrease at lower color levels, the weapon also has an increased chance of bouncing off a monster, doing no damage and dulling the weapon further. This is why it’s important tosharpen weapons with a whetstonewhen they start to get dull.
The Bludgeoner Skill
Bludgeoner is a skill that is inherent to someMonster Hunter Risearmor pieces, but can also be added via crafting blunt jewel decorations. The armor pieces that have bludgeoner naturally are:
Low Rank:
High Rank:
As for decorations, players can craft a blunt jewel with the following materials:
Blunt decorations are level 2 decorations which means they’re going to be a little harder to slot into armor than some otherMonster Hunter Riseskills, and with a lot of the game’s best skills also being level 2 decorations, players will have to be very intentional about using bludgeoner. That being said, its effects are as follows:
Things to be Aware of When Using Bludgeoner
There are two things that players should keep in mind if they plan to use Bludgeoner. The first is pretty major: the skill is more of a hinderance than a benefit if used at level 1 or level 2. The reason for this, is that while the damage modifier for yellow sharpness is 1.00, meaning it should do the base amount of damage for a weapon, it actually doesn’t completely.
YouTuber GaijinHunter has helpfully explained that there is actually an attack penalty whenattacking with yellow sharpnessor lower during certain animations. If players have yellow sharpness and their attack connects with the monster at the beginning of the attack’s animation, it will only do 60% of the base damage. If it hits at the end of the attack’s animation, it will only do 70% of the base damage. Hitting during the middle of the animation does do full damage, but that’s not easily done consistently. Therefore the 5% or 10% increase in attack from bludgeoner will pale in comparison to the 40% or 30% decrease in attack.
However, that does mean that the third level of the skill is viable because it activates at green sharpness. So players can use that, but they don’t want to go below green sharpness or the skill will become ineffective.
Also to note, just because damage may increase when using low sharpness, it doesn’t mean the weapon still won’t bounce off the monster. Therefore, players who want to use bludgeoner may also want to invest in the Mind’s Eye skill, which haschanged a bit fromMonster Hunter Worldand has the following effects:
Using Mind’s Eye will not only prevent attacks from being deflected, but will do more damage to the target if it would normally have been reflected. The Mind’s Eye decorationis also a level two decoration though, so it may be difficult to get Bludgeoner level 3 and Mind’s Eye into a build. However, the high rank Tigrex armor does come with Bludgeoner level 3 and Mind’s Eye level 2 naturally.
Monster Hunter Riseis now available for the Nintendo Switch. A PC release is slated for 2022.
