Along withUncharted, HBO has confirmed that it will be working with PlayStation on aTV series adaptation ofThe Last of Us. The series is not as far along in production asUncharted, with the cast yet to be announced. HBO has however confirmed that Neil Druckman and Craig Mazin, writers of HBO miniseriesChernobyl, will be the writers on this series.Chernobylgained mass acclaim from both critics and audiences, which makes this choice of writers very exciting.
Sony appears to be approaching both of these adaptations differently. While there is no trailer yet forUncharted, the casting of two known action stars suggests it will be an action-oriented blockbuster. Meanwhile, the collaboration with HBO andChernobyl’s writersforThe Last of Uscould suggest it’s going in a darker, more serious direction. This suggests that Sony is making sure the way the game is adapted suits its source material, which is promising for whichever properties they decide to adapt in the future.
Video game movies often get a reputation for not being very good, even if the film is a box office success. Whether that reputation is justified or not is arguable, but upcoming game or game inspired adaptations seem determined to change it for the better. This includesFree Guy,the upcomingResident Evilmovie, and theBorderlandsadaptation, which is set to star Oscar winner Cate Blanchett.
