Summary

The new era on display inMortal Kombat 1has given NetherRealm a chance for some fresh character designs, and it’s these new looks which has one player suggesting one of the game’s first post-launch cosmetic packs take from 2021’sMortal Kombatfilm. Much like the upcoming game, the most recent movie got to offer its own visual takes on franchise regulars such asSub-Zero, Kano, and Scorpion that fit its own spin on theMortal Kombatuniverse. It has been the similarities between some of the characters in the film and upcoming game which gave the player in question the idea for an additional cosmetic pack.

Mortal Kombat 1is already set to shake up the franchise’s universe as a result of Liu Kang’s rise to godhood and Kronika’s defeat at the end ofMortal Kombat 11. Under Liu Kang’s guidance, the new timeline has seen the realms enjoy an extended period of peace the previous timeline never truly knew. It appears, however, despite the Fire God’s efforts that new threats are beginning to rise and will require the aid of familiar faces who have seen their own stories drastically altered in this new era as well.

Liu Kang’s new era hasn’t just meant new narrative paths for many familiar characters, but also fresh designs to help them stand apart from previous entries. It was these new designs that caught the eye of Reddit user Cornpopwasbad, who suggested the new looks for characters like Sub-Zero andShang Tsungwere not far off from their appearances in the 2021 live-action film. Corn adds, given these apparent similarities, that they would like to see a movie skin pack forMortal Kombat 1at some point.

It wouldn’t be the first time NetherRealm released a movie skin pack, either, as one was previously released forMortal Kombat 11based on the original 1995 film. Players got their first taste of it with the return of actorCary-Hiroyuki Tagawaas Shang Tsung for the game’s Aftermath DLC before a full update was released a short time later. The update allowed players to don skins of actors Christopher Lambert, Linden Ashby, and Bridgette Wilson who starred in the 1995 film as Raiden, Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade, respectively, with the actors also recording the characters' dialogue as the finishing touch.

While it remains to be seen if NetherRealm will do the same inMortal Kombat 1for the most recent film entry, the studio is already set to include plenty of powerhouse names from the big and small screen. Action movie legend Jean-Claude Van Damme will provide his voice and likeness as a bonus skin for Johnny Cage, though it will only be available to players who pick up the deluxe edition. Thefirst Kombat Packwill also see the additions of Homelander, Peacemaker, and Omni-Man to the main roster alongside returning characters Takeda, Quan Chi, and Ermac.

Mortal Kombat 1is scheduled to release September 19 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
