Summary
Mortal Kombat 1is an ambitious reboot of the series, but it still pays homage to some of the franchise’s new and old traditions. The game has added an assist mechanic in the form of Kameo Fighters, and its timeline has been rebooted once again, allowing for characters and their role inMK’s lore to be re-imagined. While a lot has been reworked, the new renditions of characters honor their origins, a trait which has extended to those included in the game’s first Kombat Pack.Mortal Kombat 1’s Quan Chi has fatalities that take full advantage of his abilities and legacy asMK’s most notorious necromancer.
Quan Chi, released on Jul 25, 2025, is the second of six planned kombatants forKombat Pack 1. These six fully playable characters will also be joined by five Kameo Fighters, meaning thatMK1’s first round of DLC is massive. Among the fully playable fighters are three guest characters and three series veterans. Controversially, Ermac and Quan Chi appear in the game’s story mode but are not included in the base roster. Quan Chi has now arrived, but Ermac will remain unplayable until next Spring. A specific date is not yet known for his release, but so far, new fighters have been spaced one to two months apart, with owners of the Premium Edition getting access to them one week early.

Quan Chi’s ‘Pentamagic Trick’ is a Brutal Movie Reference
Quan Chi’s Pentamagic Trick is subdued compared to otherMortal Kombat 1fatalities, but it still fits the character. During the finisher, he calls on five glass panels to lower onto the opponent, dissecting them into multiple pieces. The move is likely a reference toThe Cell, a film in which a horse meets a similar fate. This fatality also feels fitting for the character. Quan Chi is a necromancer who uses magic, but his fighting style is always highly physical and close-ranged, unlike many of the game’s other magician characters. This fatality uses magic but retains a high degree of physicality, which is emblematic of Quan Chi’s fighting style.
Pentamagic Trick continuesMK’s tradition of horror referencesand fits in with Quan Chi’s fatalities in other games. InMortal Kombat X, Quan Chi has a fatality in which he uses his powers to send a knife through his opponent’s mouth and then raises and lowers the character to bisect them. The game also features a finisher in which he uses portals to cut someone in half. Given his propensity for cutting characters into pieces, Pentamagic Trick seems like a natural escalation of Quan Chi’s previous fatalities.

Quan Chi’s Secret Fatality is one of MK1’s Most Sadistic
Quan Chi’s second fatality is one of the most brutal finishing moves in the game. In this second finisher, Quan Chi mind controls his opponent, making them jam their hands into their eye sockets and tear their face apart. After this, the opponent twists their head to face the wrong way and pulls it off, handing it to Quan Chi. Making one’s opponents kill themselves is gruesome, even byMortal Kombat’sstandards. This fatality’s grisly and over-the-top nature makes it comparable to some ofMortal Kombat 1’s best fatalities.
Quan Chi Has Access To Extra Fatalities
On top of his own finishers, Quan Chi can also performMK1’s seasonal fatalitieslike his fellow cast members. So far, NetherRealm has sold seasonal fatalities for Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Selling these themed finishers as microtransactions has proven to be controversial with the game’s community, but adding more fatalities to the title is undeniably a good idea since they are one of the franchise’s biggest draws. Now that Quan Chi has arrived inMortal Kombat 1, fans can begin looking ahead to the release of Peacemaker in February 2024.
