It has been almost 25 years since the release of the originalMortal Kombatmovie that for years stood as the gold standard for video game film adaptations. But it was only a matter of time beforeMortal Kombatgot the reboot treatment with all theMortal Kombatblood and gorefans can expect from the franchise. Today an actor on the film tweeted out some new information about the project that has now officially wrapped production.
As far as reboots go,Mortal Kombat(2021) seems to be in a very good position. The film will be produced by superstar James Wan, the director ofAquaman,Saw,The Conjuring, andDead Silenceand tapped for Director is Simon McQuoid.

Add an all-star cast with the likes of Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion and Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero andMortal Kombatis looking like one of the more promising reboots in recent memory. One of those stars is Ludi Lin, who has been having an amazing last few years. He first came into the public eye playing Zack the Black Ranger in Lionsgate’s 2017 reboot ofPower Rangersand is also tapped to playShang Chiin Marvel’s first Asian led superhero film. But before that Lin is set to playMortal Kombatseries protagonist Liu Kang in the upcoming reboot. Filming began in September of this year in Australia, and thanks to a tweet from Lin earlier today a few more details are now known. Lin also isn’t the only cast member postingbehind the scenes pictures of the newMortal Kombatfilmeither.
First, production onMortal Kombathas wrapped meaning that post-production will begin very shortly. Second, Lin gave this information with an accompanying GIF that shows a layer of ice being melted away revealing an out of focus photo of, presumably, himself as Liu Kang, fire in hand. The photo also had a rock with the words “Game Over” etched into it. It could also be a reference toSub Zero’s realmin the film, which was teased earlier this month.
This can mean a couple of things. It can be hinting towards a confrontation between Liu and Sub Zero, as well as the more obvious clue that Liu Kang will be utilizing his iconic fireball attack. This wouldn’t be the first time Lin has hinted at a potential onscreen matchup, as he has alreadyteased a fight with Kabal. Which is the kind of thing that was mostly avoided in the original film. If this is a sign that the new film will be leaning more into the fantasy elements of the franchise, then that is very good news for fans.
Production seems to be going very well asMortal Kombat’s release datemoved up to June 07, 2025, from its original release date of March 5th. Moving up almost an entire two months is a pretty big deal, and that can only mean the studio has a lot of confidence in the project. A big reveal trailer at an event like San Diego Comic-Con next year is almost guaranteed at this point, if not sooner.
