The twitter account ofNetflix’strue crime seriesUnsolved Mysteriesannounced a big update to one of their most tragic episodes. The body of Alonzo Brooks, whose death was detailed in episode 4, ‘No Ride Home,’ has been exhumed and his case reopened by the FBI.
In April 2004, Alonzo attended a party with his friends out in La Cygne, Kansas, approximately 50 miles from his hometown of Gardner. During the party, Brooks allegedly got into a racially-motivated altercation with another partygoer. His friends left the party assuming he’d find his own way back to Gardner. However when he failed to return home the next day, he was presumed missing. An initial search of the area immediately around the house where the party was turned up Alonzo’s boots and hat. Both Linn County Police and Kansas Bureau searched the surrounding area for several weeks, but found no further sign of Alonzo. Curiously, Alonzo’s family searched his body almost immediately when they searched the same area later in May. Family and friends suspect that his killer was keeping Alonzo’s body in a different location, then dumped it where it was likely to be found e once it was public knowledge that there was a serious investigation into his disappearance.

Unsolved Mysteries' Executive Producer Terry Dunn Meurer told Variety, “Alonzo Brooks was probably [the case] we’ve received the most emails on. Lots of theories that we had already heard when we were producing the episodes, but there are some new names that have come in and that we forwarded onto the FBI. There were a lot of people there at that party, somebody witnessed what happened. We just hope that they’ll come forward.”
It’s unclear why Alonzo’s body was exhumed. It may be to pursue new evidence or simply to confirm how long his body was in water. His sudden appearance in a creek bed that had been searched several times is a matter of great confusion. One theory is that he was in a nearby river and got washed downstream during heavy rains, but when Alonzo’s family found him, his wallet wasn’t water damaged and his body didn’t appear to be waterlogged.
