The Atlanta Filming Instagram account recently released set photos of what many believe to be one of the locations forGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Although the environment looks pretty much normal, the extras who are on set have certain quirks to their faces and bodies that suggest they are part of a completely different planet from what we’ve seen in the previous installments of theGuardians of the Galaxyfilms. Because the sets look normal while everyone looks very different, this set is believed to be re-creating Counter-Earth from the Marvel Comics. In the comics, the Counter-Earth was created by the Higher Evolutionary to be a purer version of the original Earth. Unfortunately, Counter-Earth turned out to be much like the original Earth, except it had no superheroes. If this is going to be in thenext installment ofGuardians of the Galaxy, that opens up so many possibilities for where the story could go.
What’s madeGuardians of the Galaxystand out among other Marvel Studios properties is how it’s basically made its own rules for both its story and its heroes. It’s never been confined by the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s restraints like other MCU movies have. The planets that the Guardians have explored only serve to add more intrigue. Having them possibly go to Counter-Earth not only adds more intrigue to this universe, but it falls in line with what the Guardians have been about since the beginning.
This also serves as more evidence of the creative mind of James Gunn, who has certified himself as one of the greatest superhero filmmakers of all time. From both his work withGuardians of the GalaxyandThe Suicide Squad, it’s clear there are no bounds to the creative choices he makes. It’s also very apparent that Gunn wants to explore pretty much everything he can when it comes to Marvel’s universe. Expanding on an already pretty large universe is ambitious, to say the least, but at least Marvel Studios knows it’s in good hands with Gunn running the show.
It’s especially refreshing knowing all the uncertainty surrounding the future of theGuardians of the Galaxyfilm franchise. Dave Bautista has said this is the last time he will appear as Drax andKaren Gillan has acted mysteriouslyabout her future as Nebula.Guardianshas been Marvel Studios' greatest success story knowing how obscure they were before the first film came out. If this truly is the end, Marvel Studios must make every second of this upcoming installment count to keep its audience invested.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3will be released in theaters on May 5th, 2023.
