Fans of the classic 1980’s showKnight Riderhave gone nearly 12 years without any significant update from their favorite sentient car, but can now rest easy knowing there’s still hope on the horizon. Spyglass Media Group has officially partnered up with James Wan and Michael Clear of Atomic Monster in order to produce a film based on the original action series.
The original show, which ended production in 1986, featured a sentient car, KITT, and its driver, MichaelKnight(David Hasselhoff), as they worked to fight crime using the car’s advanced technology. Due to its popularity, the brand spun off into three other shows, three television movies, several video games, and even its own fan convention named KnightCon.

Most of the conflicts in the original show centered around good-natured people being coerced or oppressed by sinister or misguided organizations. Currently available information suggests that the new film will be set in the present day and will seek to capture that same anti-establishment tone set by the other versions. Notably, the script is being worked on by TJ Fixman, who has worked on many video game scripts.
Fixman’s most successful project as a video game writer is his work onRatchet and Clank, a beloved seriesby Insomniac Games. Fixman also worked on the company’s other series,Resistance: Fall of Man. He has also sold several film scripts to various companies, including titles such asMen Who Kill to Foxstarring Michael B. Jordan, andOne Night on the Hudson. Atomic Monster, meanwhile, is responsible for the upcomingMalignantand New Line Cinema’sMortal Kombat.
Hopefully this newKnight Riderproject will begin production soon and find success during filming. This is not the first attempted reboot of the series with the 2008Knight Riderbeing cancelled after one season, and the most recent plan, a web series rumored to have starred David Hasselhoff, going silent and presumably cancelled. Fans will have to content themselves with the currently existing media for now until more is shared about this new film. Until then, the most recent appearance of Michael Knight will continue to be David Hasselhoff’sappearance inCall of Duty: Infinite Warfare.
