Sonic Superstarsis a new co-opSonic the Hedgehoggame coming to PC and consoles later this fall. Sega announced the new game duringGeoff Keighley’s 2023 Summer Game Feston June 8th, and fans are sure to be thrilled with this surprise announcement and its relatively close release date.
Sega released the firstSonicthe Hedgehoggame on the Sega Genesis in 1991. Its high-speed gameplay made it stand out from other 2D platformers of the time and earned the series a die-hard fanbase that follows it to this day. The franchise has been through its ups and downs over the years, and some say it never fully recovered from the jump to 3D. However,Sonic Superstarsmay have a chance to capture a modern audience while delivering on the old-school gameplay that longtime fans want.

Sonic Superstars' Summer Game Fest announcement trailer opened with a 2DSonic dashing through the iconic Green Hill Zonewhen he suddenly crosses the border into 3D. After a bit of confusion, he shrugs and runs off into the beautifully 3D-modeled side-scrolling environment. However, while the sight of classicSonicgameplay in a new look was enough to earn applause from the live audience,Sonic Superstar’s most significant new feature is the addition of 4-player co-op.
Sonic Superstarslets players break the sound barrier as Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, or Amy. In addition to all four being available in single-player, fans can pick their favorite supersonic mammal and partner with three friends to stop the sinister plans ofSonicantagonist Doctor “Eggman” Robotnik. The trailer also showed how each character brings something special to the table. As with otherSonicgames, the title character may be faster, but Tails' flight and Knuckles' climbing ability are handy in traversing the levels. Meanwhile, Amy’s hammer allows her to clear a path through some obstacles.
TheSonic Superstarstrailer also showed off some unique levels and exciting power-ups. Two examples of the latter included a flying void and aTron-looking environment the characters into voxel squids. Meanwhile,one powerup turned Sonic into hedgehog-shaped water, letting him traverse up waterfalls into other parts of the level. Sonic also apparently now has the power to summon a flurry of other Sonics to batter bosses into submission.
Finally, fans can access an exclusive alternate Amy Rose skin by signing up onSonic Superstars' official website. The site doesn’t appear to be live as of this writing but will likely launch soon after the show.
