The lastTimeSplittersgame released in 2005, leaving its many fans wondering when they will get another sequel. Now, fans are again hoping that news of a newTimeSplittersrelease will come out soon.
TimeSplittersis an FPS seriesfollowing a titular species that is able to harvest the power of crystals to travel through time. The series boasts a trilogy of games, all released from 2000 to 2005. When the studio behind the series, Free Radical Design, failed to find a publisher for a fourth entry in the series, the studio shut down, leaving the IP rights dormant at Crytek for many years.

That was until 2018 whenTHQ Nordic purchased the rights to theTimeSplittersIP from Crytek. The news of the purchase gave new fire to the hope for aTimeSplitters 4or an HD remake of the original trilogy. THQ Nordic has a history for buying the rights to older titles with a devoted fanbase and releasing remakes, such asKingdoms of Amalur: ReckoningandSpongebob Squarepants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated. Now, thanks to a couple of tweets from THQ Nordic and Deep Silver,TimeSplittersfans are hoping that the series' return may finally be coming.
The tweets obviously do not directly confirm anything, and could very well be just a sarcastic joke in response to a fan’s request for more information. THQ Nordic has teasedTimeSplittersfans before when they puta reference to aTimeSplitters 2HD remakein its titleSpellForce 3: Fallen Godlast year before revealing that it was all just a joke. On the other hand, when THQ Nordic acquired the rights to the IP they all but confirmed a plan for a release for the series, saying that news of a future title would be released “in due course.” It also would make little sense for the company to purchase the IP if it had no plans to do anything with it.
Fans' hope for a newTimeSplittersis well founded. Every entry in the series was a critical darling, and its unique blend of humor, science fiction, and creative gameplay mechanics are hard to find elsewhere in the industry. Of course, nothing has been confirmed as of yet, but it does seem pretty clear that there will be news at some point in the future, and with THQ Nordic’s solid track record of remasters, an HD remaster of the trilogy would undoubtedly be pretty great.
