The release ofMonster Hunter Rise: Sunbreakdramatically expanded the roster of monsters to hunt. New and old creatures alike joinedMonster Hunter Rise, but each new entry in theMonster Hunterseries leaves some monsters behind. Many haven’t been seen in years, leaving players wondering when they will next get to hunt these forgotten monsters again.
Monster Hunter Riseand its predecessorMonster Hunter Worldhave both done a commendable job of representing the series' history, with some classicMonster Hunterreps appearing in every gameso far - namely the signature Rathian and Rathalos. But others have been excluded from newer releases, stuck in the earliest iterations of theMonster Hunterseries. From elder dragons to mild-mannered herbivores, these memorable monsters deserve a spot in futureMonster Hunter Riseupdates.

Lao-Shan Lung
The series' first siege monster, Lao-Shan Lung dates back the originalMonster Hunter. Lao-Shan Lung is a massive monster comparable in size to Safi’Jiva fromMonster Hunter World, and as a result it’s earned the name of “The Old Mountain Dragon” with a fearsome reputation to boot. It’s known for inflicting mindless devastation on its surroundings, leveling towns and ignoring hunters entirely thanks to its hulking size, ranking as one of thestrongest Elder Dragons according to lore.
Monoblos
Monoblos are large Flying Wyverns that also made their first appearance in the originalMonster Hunter. With a rock-hard frill protecting its neck and a single massive horn, Monoblos look like a cross between a Barroth and a Diablos.Like Diablos, Monoblos have a club-like tail that they can use to devastating effect, crushing attackers and keeping them at a distance. Native to the desert, Monoblos are one of many monsters thatfans are hoping will return inMonster Hunter Rise’s future updates.
Blangonga
Blangonga is an ape-like beast first introduced inMonster Hunter 2.Cunning and highly aggressive, the Blangonga is an alpha male who leads a pack of Blangos, using sheer numbers and organized pack tactics to overwhelm even veteran hunters. The Blangonga is native to cold environments, while itscounterpartRajang is native to more volcanic regions. While Rajang tends to hunt alone, the Blangonga’s cohort of Blangos can make a difficult fight even more challenging.
Shen Gaoren
Shen Gaoren is an enormous crab-like monster that also made its first appearance inMonster Hunter 2.It’s part of a family known as Carapaceons, counted alongside Daimyo Hermitaur and Shogun Ceanataur. Yama Tsukami
Yama Tsukami is another unconventional monster first introduced inMonster Hunter 2.With a floating octopus-like body covered in moss and algae, it is perhaps the most unusual Elder Dragon in theMonster Hunterseries, and Yama Tsukami stands as another memorable seige-basedElder Dragon not featured inMonster Hunter WorldorRise. Its classification as an Elder Dragon is owed to the fact that it can’t really be categorized in any other class of monster. With a unique physiology and a one-of-a-kind hunt, Yama Tsukami should make a return to the franchise soon.
Akantor
Akantor is a gigantic magma-dwelling Flying Wyvern first seen inMonster Hunter Freedom 2.Covered with a hardy shell and deadly spikes, Akantor generally resembles a snapping turtle with two massive tusks. It primarily resides within deep magma pools and inflicts devastating effects on the surrounding environment through corrosive saliva and a roar that can inflict serious sonic damage. Only Elder Dragons can compete with Akantor, making it one ofthe strongest flying wyvern in theMonster Hunterfranchise.
Gigginox
First introduced inMonster Hunter 3,Gigginox is a Flying Wyvern native to deep cave systems. Gigginox has a unique hunting tactic, using a special organ that detects heat signatures from its potential prey in lieu of its blindness. It’s somewhat similar to theKhezu featured inMonster Hunter Rise, though serves as a much more agile combatant. Its mouth is lined with rows of teeth and can extend over double its original length to inflict damage with surprising speed.
Agnaktor
Not to be confused with Akantor, Agnaktor is a lava-swimming, rock-tunneling monster that first appeared inMonster Hunter 3.Agnaktor has been known to drill through molten lava and volcanic rock with its piercing beak, bursting out toward unsuspecting hunters at a moment’s notice. But like its counterpart Lavasioth, which appearsMonster Hunter World, every monster has a weakness. Given its native habitat, it should come as no surprise that Water elemental weapons perform especially well against Agnaktor.
Jhen Mohran
Jhen Mohran is a key Elder Dragon fromMonster Hunter 3.With huge tusks extending from both sides of its alligator-like mouth, Jhen Mohran is an apex predator native to the desert. Valuable mineral outcrops line Jhen Mohran’s spine, much likethe Kulve Taroth fromMonster Hunter World. As a massive and dangerous Elder Dragon not seen for generations, Jhen Mohran is one of many monsters fans hope to see in future iterations of theMonster Hunterseries.
Monster Hunter Riseis out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
