One Piece’sEgghead Island arc continues delivering and this week’s chapter offered to the fans what they had been missing for the last few months.Since the Egghead arc just began, fans were not expecting to see high-level combat for quite a while, however, this week’s chapter proved to deliver just that and made the arc even more interesting than it already was.

Combining incredible world building, lore about the history of theOne Pieceworld, and secrets about the mystifying objects like Devil Fruits with high-octane action makes Egghead Island one of the most beloved arcs in One Piece so far. Oda has not set a foot wrong in this arc up until this point and fans hope that continues right until its end. This week’s chapter certainly delivered, with Luffy taking on Rob Lucci in fierce combat,along with more lore from Dr. Vegapunk.
Luffy And Rob Lucci Collide
Towards the end of last week’s chapter,Rob Lucci made his moveand infiltrated Egghead Island. Soon, he was faced with Atlas, one of the bodies of Dr. Vegapunk. Without wasting any time, Lucci launched a powerful Rokuogan at her, doing tremendous internal damage and knocking her out of commission with ease. That is exactly when Luffy and Lucci crossed parts and this week’s chapter picks up right from there. One Piece 1069 saw Luffy react in a way fans expected him to. Knowing that Atlas gave him food, Luffy could not let this slide and immediately attacked Rob Lucci.

To the surprise of the fans, Luffy was seen entering his Gear Fifth Nika form to take on Lucci, however, this wasn’t because Luffy neededall that power to battle Lucci. Instead, this was done by Oda on purpose so that he could deliver lore about Nika and Devil Fruits, in general. As soon as Luffy tapped into his awakened Devil Fruit powers, so did Lucci, and fans finally got a look at his new Neko Neko no Mi, Model: Leopard awakened form. Expectedly, Lucci has grown much stronger and he was able to clash with Luffy for quite a while, however, it was quite clear to see that Luffy was barely even trying in the fight.
The Lore About Devil Fruits
Oda purposely had Luffy and Lucci used Devil Fruit awakenings so that Vegapunk could deliver lore about Devil Fruits to the fans. Decades ago, Oda promised that he would explain more about how Devil Fruits came into existence and how they work once a certain Navy scientist makes his appearance. Clearly, he was referring to Dr. Vegapunk, and now that he has made his appearance in the series, Oda needed an opportunity to deliver further exposition on these mystical fruits. Upon seeing Luffy’s Nika form, Vegapunk was absolutely stunned and told the Straw Hat crew that the Gomu Gomu no Mi does not exist in the Devil Fruit encyclopedia. Instead, Luffy’s appearance matches that of Nika, the Sun God who was worshiped in ancient times.
According to him, Nika’s history was erased by those of the World Government, however, as long as people seek freedom, Nika will always make himself available. Vegapunk went on to explain that Devil Fruits work in a similar manner. Essentially, these fruits are a manifestation of the desires of people. As such, these fruits are born from people’s wishes of wanting to be able to do something that they can’t. Those who have consumed Devil Fruits are, essentially, living in the future that they created themselves. Since this future is, by all means, unnatural, the sea, which is the incarnation of mother nature, hates them and that is exactly why Devil Fruit users drown in water.
Sentomaru Falls
Following Vegapunk’s explanation about Devil Fruits, fans saw the conflict on Egghead Island grow significantly. To stop the Cipher Pol, Dr. Vegapunk ordered S-Snake, S-Shark, and S-Hawk into action and assigned their control to none other than Sentomaru. Kaku andStussy attempted to fight the Seraphims, however, knowing that they were at a big disadvantage, they couldn’t put up much of a fight. Meanwhile, Lucci was immediately knocked out of commission by Luffy, however, thanks to his awakened Zoan powers, he recovered rather quickly and took out Sentomaru.
This worked in his favor as the control of the Serpahims is now passed over to the Cipher Pol. According to Lucci, there is a hierarchy of control when it comes to the Seraphims. The Gorosei stand atop everyone else, and they are followed by Stella and the six Vegapunk bodies. After them, Sentomaru holds control of these fighting monsters and finally, those who hold the chip can control them which, in this case, is the Cipher Pol. With Sentomaru now having been taken out, the next chapter is certainly going to be incredibly intense, with Luffy possibly taking things more seriously and ending the fight against Lucci rather quickly.
