Since the originalOverwatch’s 2016 debut, Blizzard’s animated cinematics have captivated audiences with their striking visuals and vibrant personalities. Over the years, they’ve become a cornerstone ofOverwatch’s unique storytelling, particularly when delving into characterorigins like Hanzo’s “Dragons” cinematic. Unfortunately, acknowledging the amount of time that these shorts take, it’d be easier for Blizzard to deliver lore more consistently via a different method.
Conveniently, theInvasion missions that launched with Season 6ofOverwatch 2are the perfect solution for Team 4 to continue updating its ongoing story in-game. The game mode not only features an intel database but also gives players an avenue to explore how the characters interact with one another. Sadly, as of Season 9, the Invasion tab has been left unattended for over six months.
Overwatch 2 Could Do More With Its Missions Tab
Overwatch 2’s intel databaseand communications pages captivated lore enthusiasts when they were released last year, offering a treasure trove of insights into the game’s complex universe. The humorous dialogue between Tracer and Winston added a delightful layer of personality to the characters, immediately making them feel more alive and relatable. Additionally, for those less familiar with the lore, insightful details on organizations like Talon and Null Sector served as a valuable entry point. However, the initial excitement waned as players quickly devoured the content and were left waiting for more.
While frequent updates to the tab might not be feasible for Blizzard, adding fresh narratives to the database even once per season couldplease the lore-hungry fans. Something fresh, however small or brief, is often better than nothing at all. For instance, never-before-seen emails or new text conversations could be a simple but engaging way to keep the player base entertained.
Overwatch 2’s Future is Uncertain
Unfortunately, Blizzard’s recent layoffs, including the Lead Narrative Designer in January, raise concerns about the future ofOverwatch 2’s content pipeline and dedication to the lore. While some of these layoffs coincided with the arrival of thenewOverwatch 2esports program, most had to do with Microsoft’s acquisition of the company and Blizzard’s declining revenue. Recapturing the magic of its predecessors likely won’t be easy, but the dedication and talent of the remaining developers are promising. Hopefully, Microsoft’s merger with Blizzard includes a focus on expanding the game’s lore.
