Paul Bettany has had one of the most unexpected and interesting careers in the MCU, which includes his recent and critically acclaimed work inWandaVision. However, his time in the cinematic universe may now be done. While doing press forWandaVision’s Emmy campaign, Bettany revealed toThe Playlistthat he is not contracted to appear in any more MCU projects at this point. He also confirmed that it doesn’t appear that there will be a second season ofWandaVision.
Following the death of Vision inAvengers: Infinity War, Bettany had previously assumedhis time in the MCU was doneonly for Keven Feige to pitch him the concept forWandaVision. Bettany did go on to point out thatthe introduction of White Visionin the final episodes ofWandaVisiondoes leave the possibility of him returning to continue that character but admits he doesn’t know of any such plans.

Bettany began his journey in the MCU as the voice of J.A.R.V.I.S, Tony Stark’s sarcastic yet loyal operating system. InAvengers: Age of Ultron, Bettany was brought into the MCU in live-action form when J.A.R.V.I.S. was placed into the android body to become The Vision. His relationship with Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) grew inCaptain America: Civil Warbefore becoming romantic.
Sadly, since he was killed by Thanos before “the blip”, he was not one of the heroeswho was brought back. However, a version of Vision was created by Wanda in her takeover of Westview inWandaVisiononly for her to lose him again when she dissolves the false reality. As is always the case with MCU stars commenting on their projects, Bettany might be concealing the truth. He certainly has been knownto trick fans in the past. But if it is true that his time in the MCU is over, it leaves mixed reactions. On the one hand, Vision has supposedly died a couple of times now and bringing him back again would start to feel ridiculous.
Even if Bettany were to play White Vision going forward, it feels like a cop-out to avoid losing one of the MCU heroes while also diminishing the loss Wanda suffered. Likewise, ifWandaVisionwas Bettany’s final project, it was a perfect one to end on and finally provided him a bigger role.
Yet Bettany’s performance inWandaVisionshowed he was really starting to make this character a fascinating one. Some fans had expected him to appear inDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnesswhere he and Wanda couldescape to some alternate realityto finally get their happy ending together. While Bettany’s future in the MCU is in question now, time will tell if it stays that way.
