Pokemonis a long-running series that has made its mark appealing to the imagination and interest of children across the world. Even before the days of adults making up a larger portion of the fandom than one would expect, thePokemon games themselves have been filled with jokes aimed at adults.

The purity of a young mind likely never understood many of them, but as older humans, they can look back and laugh at how absurd some of them are. It’s amazing that as far back asPokemon Red & Blueand throughPokemon Scarlet & Violet, GameFreak designers and developers haven’t been afraid to make jokes in a game largely aimed at kids under the age of twelve.
8A Thick Rocket
Likely one of the tamest adult-oriented jokes in all ofPokemonthat children playing the games may have completely overlooked took placein the third generation remakesPokemon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire. Disregarding how weirdly identical some of the histories in the world ofPokemonare to real-life events, there’s a part in the game where players can visit a Space Center located in Mosdeep.
There are three girls standing in from of a rocket ship display and one of them will say that they think the rocket is thick. It most certainly is just a weird translation issue, but of course, the internet can’t get over a girl calling a phallic object like a model of a rocket thick.

7Primeape’s Iron “Tail”
This one is a bit of a stretch, but at the end of the day, it’s hard to figure out what exactly the developers of Pokepark: Pikachu’s Adventure meant when they wrote the encounter between the player and this Primeape. It teaches Pikachu the move Iron Tail but says “I mastered Iron Tail without a tail! And do you know what that means?”. Now, logically it’s safe to assume it’s meant to speak to how formidable and determined this Primeape is, but some adults feel that this may be talking about something else entirely. The idea is that he used, assuming it’s a male Primeape, his genitalia in place of a tail. It’s quite the leap in logic, but it could have easily been an innuendo lost in translation as well.
6Riding An Onix
Writers who can create a line of dialogue that means something completely different based on who is reading it are a special type of comedian. Take for example a harmless comment made by a womaninPokemon X & Y,Laverre City, specifically. Pokemon like Onix are physically large and it’s completely normal for humans to fantasize about riding and commanding these large creatures.

She feels the same way, saying Onix is so big and saying she’d love to ride one someday. The unfortunate thing is that Onix’s design is rather phallic and when a woman refers to something of its shape by saying it’s big and she wants to ride it, people always take it as a penis joke.
5A Bone In The Mouth
ConsideringPokemonis a Japanese-designed and developed series that is then translated into English it’s safe to assume that there are dozens of times in which things get lost in translation. A notable example of this has to do with a conversation players have with Lana inPokemon Sun & Moon. She says that the flavor from the Rare Bone seems to fill her whole mouth.
People without a dirty mind would assume it’s an experience similar to eating bone marrow or sucking on a porkchop or steak bone that has residual flavor from the meat. Many other adults took this as an innuendo where the bone refers to a different thing people sometimes have in their mouths. Poor Lana got caught up in a situation where the minds in the gutter could not escape from their most perverted thoughts.

4Weird Hiker
Anaspect of thePokemongamesthat often get overlooked or forgotten about is the fact that the protagonists in each entry tend to be between the ages of 9 to 16, which is part of what makes the premise so wild. Parents let their kids venture into the world at that young an age in order to battle and capture wild animals that harness elements of nature to unleash damaging moves upon their target.
InPokemon Black & Whitethere happens to be a hiker who gets rather flirty with the player following their battle, going as far as to ask if the player has ever had a lover. Normally this could simply be an inquisitive stranger, but he acts rather nervous and even sweats. Then again this hiker could be a self-isolationist and simply suffers from anxiety in any and every social interaction. Giving him the benefit of the doubt at that moment is much more comforting than the darker alternate reality of what could be going on there.

3The Onix & The Cloyster
Sometimes adult-oriented jokes can be rather aggressive and obvious, but sometimes they’re cleverly thrown out there in hopes of someone noticing. InPokemon HeartGold & SoulSilver, players will run into a seemingly innocent trainer couple named Duff and Eda, with only two Pokemon on them ready for battle. As they throw out their partners the player is greeted by a team consisting of an Onix and a Cloyster.

Since the first generation of games, adults have referred to Cloyster as the Georgia O’Keefe Pokemon, a reference to a famous artist known for her inclusion of female genitalia in her work. Onix is a large snake-like Pokemon whose body is rather phallic in nature. It’s clear to see where this is going and the fact that the duo belongs to a loving couple makes the whole encounter as awkward as one who noticed the situation would expect it to be.
2Pokeballs & Bikinis
Often in the world of video games, there tends to be an issue where female characters are designed with clothing that isn’t as useful or practical as their male counterparts. Whether that be lingerie posing as effective armor or women dressed in little to no clothing for no apparent reason.
InPokemon X & Y, an issue comes up regarding where a woman wearing a bikini keeps her pokeballs containing her team of pocket monsters. She ends by saying it’s a woman’s secret, and for most kids, that joke probably goes over their heads, but for adults, it feels like she may be insinuating something a lot more sexual in nature.

1Professor Oak Came
When it comes to adult humor, phrasing can go a long way in making something much funnier and more inappropriate than what was ever intended. This happens often enough between native English speakers, so the idea of it happening when translating Japanese to English isn’t too farfetched.
When the player beats the Elite Four and is standing in the Hall of Fame next to their rivalProfessor Oak comes rushing in. He says"I came when I heard you’d beaten the Elite Four". Most people reading that would understand that he meant he traveled to the location of the Elite Four as fast as he could. For all of the people with dirty minds, it sounded to them like Professor Oak was much more excited than he needed to be at that moment.
