One of thebiggest controversies withPokemon Sword and Shieldprior to it’s launch late last year was related to the PokeDex. Fans were hoping for the game to use the National PokeDex, but as they quickly found out, GameFreak used what it called the Galar PokeDex, which limited the base roster to only 400 and left out a lot of fan favorite pocket monsters. While today’s Nintendo Direct may not have been what players expected, there was some good news for fans hoping to see classic Pokemon make a return.
The main announcement was a pair of expansions that are set to arrive later in 2020 known as The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra. Each expansion adds a new land for players to explore, which also presented the developers with an opportunity to add even more monsters intoPokemon Sword and Shield. Considering how upset the fanbase was with the lack of certain creatures, the developers clearly used the opportunity to make amends, while also adding in more than a few new creatures to track down as well.

One of the biggest reveals during this direct is that the fan favorite Dragon/Ground type monster Garchomp is making its grand return to the series. Originally introduced in Generation IV throughPokemon Diamond and Pearl, it’s a very powerful creature that has features similar to a jet plane and a hammerhead shark. Its reveal appeared to be a hit with fans as Garchomp quickly started trending on social media. It’s going to be a popular addition to manyplayer teams in Generation VIII.
Thankfully, Garchomp wasn’t the only surprising reveal as a whole slew of classic legendary Pokemon including MewTwo was confirmed to be dynamaxing inside Pokemon Dens within The Crown Tundra. The direct also confirmed that over 200 well-known Pokemon from past games are making a comebackin both upcoming expansionsas well as being able to transfer them throughPokemon HOME. A few they revealed to be included in the expansions include:
