Sony could be planning to skip E3 2020, suggests a new rumor. The company alsoskipped E3 2019, making it the first time that Sony hadn’t attended the event in 24 years.

A report by Video Games Chronicle says that some anonymous sources have said that Sony doesn’t planning on coming to E3 2020. Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter, who is famous for controversial gaming suggestions like the time he saidconsole gaming wouldn’t be around in 2020, also doubts that Sony will be there. Pachter said that as far as he knows, Sony doesn’t plan to attend and while he hopes that Sony will change its mind, he is “skeptical.” The Xbox team is also rumored to be making its E3 2020 plans bigger because it thinks that Sony won’t be there.

However, it doesn’t seem as thoughSony’s decision not to attend E3 2020 has been completely confirmed. Some sources in the report said that Sony could potentially talk to E3’s organizers about attending E3 2020. The report also says that E3 2020 planning isn’t running as normal because organizers the Entertainment Software Association, appointed a new CEO in May 2019 and several ESA staff have also left. There were also reports that the ESA is planning major changes for E3 2020, such as a queuing app and getting more celebrities to attend and this could also be why a deal with Sony hasn’t been officially confirmed.

If Sony does choose to skip E3 2020, it’s unclear how or where the company will make any big PS5 announcements. The company chose to reveal thePS5 logoat CES 2020, but it could be planning an event of its own to offer the first look at the PS5’s design. Sony revealed the PS4 in 2013 at an event called the PlayStation Meeting and it could do the same for the PS5.

E3 is a huge event that gamers and media turn to every year for the biggest gaming announcements and reveals, but Sony may not feel that it needs to take part. Sony has found success with its State of Play streams and these are far cheaper than hiring a theater to hold an E3 event. Releasing demos on the PlayStation Store and inviting media to events would also allow fans and critics to enjoy gameplay of newly announced games the way that E3 booths do.
