Summary
A newSonypatent that describes an AI-powered avatar creation system has surfaced. With this,Sonyseems to be looking to increase the degree to which player avatars in PlayStation games can be customized.
Being the graphical representation of users, avatars enable people to create a digital version of themselves for use in a game. The various avatars and customization options available in certain games allow players to express themselves to their liking. However, it appears that these avatars are set to get a major upgrade down the road. Apparently, Sony is once again using AI for this, similar to its other patents, such as the one that revolves around anAuto-Play mode for PlayStation games. With its newest technology, Sony may soon leverage AI to let the PlayStation community take customization of in-game avatars further up a notch.

According to a recently published patent, Sony is working on anew AI technology for PlayStation gamesthat generates a highly personalized in-game avatar. The new avatar creation system accepts an image from the user along with a custom text-based prompt and produces an avatar based on those inputs. The resulting avatar will have a style that is consistent with the style used in the game for which it is generated. Such an avatar generated at any point will be applicable for use in that particular session of the game that is running at the time. As it turns out, Sony first filed the patent on July 02, 2025, with the same being published on Jun 17, 2025.
How Sony’s New Avatar Creation System Uses AI
In the avatar creation system’s custom prompt, users can set the desired characteristics for their digital avatar. For instance, they can use statements, such as “make me stronger” or “make me thinner” to instruct the AI on how to tailor the avatar according to the user’s requirements. Moreover, if the avatar is being generated for use in a racing game, then the AI tool will curate the avatar to look like a racer, complete with the typical racing outfit and gear. In order to achieve this, the patent reveals that the image generation model relies on using artist-curated images as training data.
While the AI-based avatar creation tool is the latest Sony innovation to come to the fore, it isn’t the only technology that the company is currently working on. Earlier this month, a patent revealed that the console giant has plans for atemperature-changing PlayStation controller. Prior to that, in June, another patent published in Sony’s name shed light upon a software program designed to transform recorded gameplay sequences into playable minigames. Given such novel features are in development for Sony’s console, fans seem to have more to be excited about as they enter the latter half of the PS5’s lifecycle.
Avatars are a basic yet essential aspect of games. With the new AI-powered avatar creation system, Sony could make digital avatars more personal for everyone, adding to the overall value of this feature. As the devs continue building this technology in the background, PlayStation fans eagerly await the launch of a more powerful version of the PS5. Back in November last year, the Japan-based company released the Slim variant of the console and, withrumors and speculations about PS5 Pro piling upsince the beginning of this year, an official announcement for the same seems to be close to coming out.
