In the upcoming filmSpace Jam: A New Legacy, a new cast and old characters attempt to tell the first film’s story again. To tease the upcoming release, DC Comics released a new official clip from the LeBron James film.
As the premiere ofthe long-awaited sequel toSpace Jamdraws to a close, fans can’t help wondering how the second installment will compare. The 1996 original film became an instant classic and exists as a snapshot of ’90s American culture in many ways.

However, it’s modern Warner Bros. style animation that kicks off this new clip from DC Comics. The new clip shows James and Bugs Bunny entering Metropolis, the home of Superman, preparing to fight crime asBatman and Robinin a hysterical bunny-themed batmobile. James, who is upset that he was transformed into a sidekick, questions why he and Bugs are chasing a train. Bugs bunny replies, “We’re in DC World, Doc, and where there’s trouble, there are superheroes.” Viewers can only imagine what trouble awaits the pair after this short clip.
With multipleSpace Jam 2trailersalready released, the DC clip reassures that the sequel will have just as many witty cultural references as the first film. The second film follows a similar storyline to the original, although slightly flipped. While in the original film the Looney Tunes gang needed Michael Jordan’s help to win a basketball game, it’s James who needs the Looney Tunes' help just to get back home in the sequel. Either way,Space Jam: A New Legacyis still going to end in an epic basketball game.
Space Jam: A New Legacyis combining more modern celebrities and voice actresses such as James as himself and Zendaya as Lola Bunny. Gabriel Iglesias voices Speedy Gonzales andSpace Jam: A New Legacyis keeping some other classic characters as well, with an appearance from Jordan expected. The new film promises to combine the classic clash between live-action and animation while incorporating newer themes and a larger merchandise base than McDonald’s toys.
With ’90s reboots on the rise, these sequel films have either flopped or held their ground as classics. With the original film holding such value to ’90s kids,Space Jam: A New Legacyseeks to createanother cultural classic for the new generation of children as opposed to adding on to the nostalgic past of the ’90s. Of course, some are concerned that this sequel is little more than a glorified commercial for the HBO Max streaming service.
Space Jam: A New Legacywill be in theaters and on HBO Max starting July 16th, 2021.
