20th Century Studios' feature film adaptation of Stephen King’sBoogeymanhas cast two leads.Yellowjacketsstar Sophie Thatcher andBirds of Preystar Chris Messina have signed onto theHuluproject.
TheHulufilm will be based on King’s short story of the same name, which was published as part of hisThe Night Shiftcollection in 1978.Boogeymancenters on a man’s visit to a psychiatrist, where he recalls how his children were murdered by the eponymous character. The narrative focuses on a teenage girl and her brother, still grieving the death of their mother, as they are plagued by a sadistic presence in their home and struggle to get their mourning father to pay attention to the horrific situation.

A Hulu release date for theBoogeymanadaptation hasn’t been announced, but Deadline reports production on the project is expected to begin next month as of January 31st. Rob Savage will direct the film, having previously helmed horror features such asHostandDashcam. While Scott Beck & Bryan Woods and Akela Cooper wrote the original drafts of the screenplay,Black Swanco-writerMark Heyman is now writing a new script. Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps are producing, with Beck and Woods on board as executive producers.
Thatcher is best known for her role as Natalie inShowtime’s hit seriesYellowjackets. She also recently appeared inThe Book of Boba Fettas Drash, a member of the street gang in Mos Espa that was recruited by the newly self-anointed Daimyo. Messina, on the other hand, has several credits to his name, including acclaimed films such asVicky Cristina BarcelonaandArgo. However, genre fans may best remember him as Victor Zsasz inBirds of Prey.
Hulu isn’t the only streaming service taking an interest in adaptating King’s works. Netflix currently hasKing’sMr. Harrigan’s Phoneon track for a 2022 release, with Blumhouse producing.
In fact, Blumhouse has a handful of King adaptations in various stages of development. Most recently, Blumhouse television landed the rights to King’s crime novelLaterand is moving forward with aseries adaptation starring Lucy Liu. So, needless to say, fans of King’s work certainly have plenty to look forward to in the coming years, provided the teams behind these adaptations are just as passionate as they are.
