Once players have completed the Flooded City inTerra Nil, four new maps unlock for each climate zone on the map. The one for the temperate zone is the Abandoned Quarry, which presents a new type of challenge to players.

Terra Nilhas no new buildings or other unlockable items for the second set of maps, but each of the bonus maps has a unique set of buildings that makes the game more challenging. This guide will explain how to meet these challenges and fully restore the Abandoned Quarry to get the Open-cast Reclamation achievement.

Stage 1: Fissures and Rivers

The randomized map for the Abandoned Quarry always features several elevations descending to a pit in the center, and it has several dry riverbeds and a number of fissures scattered across the landscape. The starting buildings arethe Turbine, Toxin Scrubber, Irrigator, Water Pump, Seismic Detonator, and Excavator, along with the Cloud Seeder and Dehumidifier climate buildings.

The first thing to understand about this map is that, unlike the Volcanic Glacier, there are no biomes that need rocks, while there is a biome that needs water. This means the riverbedsshould always be filled with water rather than lava. Players may wonder why the fissures even exist, but the answer is simple.

Terra Nil Quarry Tier 2

To make use of the fissures on this map, players should first fill the rivers with water and then use Seismic Detonators in places that let the water rush in. This will freeze the lava immediately, creating a small set of rocks in a spot that’s usually far away from the next set of rocks. This will let players place Turbines in every corner of the map and thus complete stage 1.

Terra Nil Quarry Tier 3

Stage 2: Fire Without Fynbos

The tier 2 building list includes the Hydroponium, Beehive, Solar Amplifier, Arboretum, and Research Center. Players don’t need the Research Center to unlock the global humidity stat this time, but it does still provide a small discount on some building costs.

The best place for wetlands is in the large basin at the center of the map, but the big challenge of this map is figuring out how to start a fire without any fynbos. The River Valley map starts with several treeswhere players can set beehives and create fynbos, but there are no trees in the Abandoned Quarry until after players create the forest biome. Except there’s no fynbos to set on fire this time, and the Solar Amplifier doesn’t work on greenery.

The solution to this problem is the Dehumidifier. Players have no reason to use this building in the temperate zone since high humidity is always better, and so the purpose of the Dehumidifier is to start fires. The Dehumidifier converts greenery into dry, brown grass in a radius, and the Solar Amplifier can set brown grass on fire. This will create the fires needed for the Arboretum, and then the trees it creates can hold beehives and fill in the fynbos biome.

Stage 3: Easy Mode

Building forests may be hard in the Abandoned Quarry, but cleaning up afterward is easy. The tier 3 building list includes the Airship, Recycling Silo, Recycling Drone, Flying Recycling Drone, Monorail Node, Recycling Beacon, Animal Observatory, and Rock Hopper.

The Flying Recycling Drone can fly to every corner of the map, so just plant Nodes with Beacons close to buildings and use Recycling Silos to free up rock tiles when necessary. None of the animals are different from the ones in the River Valley, so this stage of the Quarry map is the easiest one.
