The Day Beforeis an upcoming open-world multiplayer zombie survival game set in a post-pandemic America. While this isn’t exactly a revolutionary concept, it does appear from the gameplay shown that this is going to be one of the biggest and most detailed entries into the genre yet.

Part of what makesThe Day Beforeso interesting is that it seems to borrow concepts from quite a few different games and bring them together to form something that seems pretty new. If the game can manage to bring this all together into something that feels cohesive, it could end up being a very healthy marriage betweenThe Last Of Us 2,DayZ,andThe Division.

The Open World

The open-world is a bit of an amalgam of all three of these games, all in different ways. First, in function, it appears to be prettysimilar to the open world inDayZ.While there’s still not a ton of concrete examples on how exactly the open world is, it seems to be a large area where players can go where they want, scavenging for loot and trying to not get eaten by zombies or murdered by other players and then eaten by zombies along the way. It doesn’t seem to be too similar in the aesthetics though, as there’s a lot of urban sprawl that’s showcased inThe Day Beforeas opposed to a lot of nature-type areas with buildings interspersed throughout inDayZ.

When it comes to how the open-world feels, it seems to be a pretty straightforward combo ofThe DivisionandThe Last Of Us. The world appears to be set in the wintertime, with holiday lights abounding, just like inThe Division. The city even feels a little bit similar otherwise, in the way the cars are laid out across the street and certain buildings are accessible. Sprinkle in some zombies, and it makes everything feel like agame similar toThe Last of Us 2.

The Combat

Once again, thecombat ofThe Day Beforefeels like a mashup of all three of these games. The DivisionandTLOU2are both third-person shooters, andDayZcan be either first or third-person depending on which option players choose. While all of these seem similar, the game that appears to have combat with the most in line with isThe Division.

Though targets don’t appear to be the bullet sponges that they can be inThe Division, it does appear that the game is very focused on using cover, with obvious cover points located around the world, especially so in the city. It’s difficult to tell what combat will be like outside of the city as very little gameplay has been shown in those areas, but it’s possible that it feels different there with the different varieties of cover.

The PvP

While themultiplayer aspect or tie-in ofThe Last Of Us 2is still supposedly still on the way, not much is known about it yet, so it can’t be compared toThe Day Before. BothThe DivisionandDayZhave heavy PvP elements though, being the last element these games that it appearsThe Day beforeshares.

The Divisionhas certain PvP areasof the game, called Dark Zones, where players can either work together or kill each other in competition for the loot in the area.DayZis a little bit more in line with what it appearsThe Day Beforeis, with PvP throughout the open-world, so that players never know whether or not another player is lurking around the corner, waiting to turn them into zombie-bait.

The Day Beforeis currently in development for PC, planned for release in Q2 2021.
