CD Projekt RED revealed how much moneyThe Witcher 3: Wild Hunthas made on Steam. The company also sells the game through itsown store, GOG, but it seems that CD Projekt RED would have made much less if it chose not to offer its game on Steam.
In a tweet, CD Projekt RED confirmed thatThe Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has made $50 million on Steam. This is only the money made between October 2018 and today, however, and the game likely made much more than that between its launch in 2015 to September 2018. It had also been announced thatThe Witcher 3: Wild Huntsales grew by 554%after the Netflix TV series was released, likely contributing a big part of that $50 million.

Many fans are glad to see thatThe Witcher 3: Wild Hunthas sold so well on Steam. CD Projekt RED hasn’t confirmed that it is developingThe Witcher 4,but if the game is making so much money, it does make it much more likely that it will start making a new game in the series. However, others have responded negatively to the announcement, saying that it shows why other stores like the Epic Games Store are so important.
One reason Epic Games created the Epic Games Store is because of how much money Steam takes from each sale. Most games get 70% of each sale, butThe Witcher 3: Wild Huntwill now get 80% of each sale. In comparison, theEpic Games Store takes 12% from each sale. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunthas sold incredibly well, and yet it would have made nearly $9 million more if it was on the Epic Games Store and not on Steam thanks to the 18% increase in revenue.
Epic Games is going to keep on signing deals with developers so that their games will be exclusive to the Epic Games Store. After all, Epic needs these games to attract users, and developers are more likely to go where they can earn more money for their work.
Thesales ofMetro Exodusalso show that fan anger and review bombing doesn’t stop Epic Games Store exclusive games from being successful when they do come to Steam. CD Projekt RED may be celebrating, but so many others will be thinking about Steam’s revenue from all of this.
The Witcher 3: Wild Huntis available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
