The producer behindResident Evil Villagehas said that the third-person mode, which will ship with the upcoming Gold Edition of the game, was a lot of work, almost on par with making a brand-new game. Along with this mode,Capcom is set to release theShadows of RoseDLC, which will also be adding The Mercenaries Additional Orders mode to the game. The Gold Edition is due to launch on October 28, so right on schedule for the Halloween period.
While the older entries in the series have traditionally been in third-person, with the first three installments also having fixed camera angles, it wasResident Evil 7that switched it up with its first-person view. The 2017 release helped reboot the franchise, taking it back to its horror roots and breathing new life into the long-running horror series that many felt had drifted away from the survival genre.Villagecontinued the first-person perspective, but it won’t be long before players will be able to utilize third-person instead, though it sounds like the feature was a lot more work than many would think.

In a recent interview with IGN Japan, producer Masachika Kawata said that implementing the new mode intoResident Evil Villagewas “about as much effort as creating a new game,” adding that just changing the perspective can make a game feel like a completely different experience. Kawata goes on to say that the studio was invested in making something “as good or better than” the likes ofRE2andRE3, with the team putting emphasis on Ethan Winter’s movements, such as guarding or moving while crouching, and ensuring that such animations would be completely “connected” in third-person mode.
When asked about a new entry in the celebrated horror series, Kawata laughed, saying they would not be able to share any details about future installments. There have already beenleaks about aResident Evil 9, with the title of the next game allegedly beingResident Evil Apocalypse. Of course, Capcom has not confirmed any rumors and, from what Kawata is saying, it’s unlikely the developer will be spilling the beans any time soon.
On top of the upcoming Gold Edition ofVillageand hopes of a ninth entry, there’s also theanticipation of theResident Evil 4remake, which is due out next March. All in all, it seems as if the flagship survival games will be enjoying more time in the spotlight for the foreseeable future after a middle period in which the series seemed to be losing favor with the horror community.
