Despite ending in 2019,Game of Thronesis still inspiring elaborate merchandise. The latest work of art comes in the form of a one-of-a-kind Fabergé dragon egg that will cost 2.2 million US dollars or 1.6 million pounds.
For those that don’t know, Fabergé is a luxury jewelry firm, well known for producing elaborate bejeweled eggs in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Due to this history, it makes sense that they would be the company to create theGame of Thronesdragon egg, or “commemorative egg objet.” Fabergé’s head designer, Liisa Tallgren, worked withGame of Thronescostume designer Michele Clapton to create “an intricate and enchanting design thattells the tale of Daenerys Targaryen’s questto take her place on the Iron Throne.”

Clapton toldThe Hollywood Reporter, “The design references Daenerys Targaryen’s incredible journey and the importance of color within her costumes, her passion for her dragons, and the way she portrayed messages via her jewelry throughout her journey on the show. References from the textures of the dragons and their iconic eggs were used to inform the surfaces of this egg objet.” The outside of the egg is purple, red, blue, and silver with diamond accents, and the inside is ruby red with a winged dragon and a miniature version of the crown that would have been presented to Daenarysif she had won the Iron Throne.
The crown inside, set with a pear-cut ruby, is called the “secret gift” of the egg, and Clapton said she immediately knew while designing what the gift would be, “It had to be the crown that Daenerys believed throughout her life was her destiny. With the crown, I referenced her dragons, their wings sweeping around protecting the beautiful Gemfields ruby that represents Daenerys, her house color, and her fierce quest to rule.” The finalized egg will be released later in 2021, while this announcement of the egg itself coincides with the ten-year anniversary ofGame of Thrones' premiere episode.
The crown as portrayed in the Fabergé egg is a hypothetical one, as Daenerys Targaryen did not win the Iron Throne at the end ofGame of Thrones. Her ending was one of the most controversial endings in theoverall polarizing final season of the show. Daenerys becomes a “mad queen” in her final season, ordering her dragon to torch King’s Landing as she tries to take the kingdom by force. She is stabbed by Jon Snow, dying in his arms after he reluctantly kills her to save the kingdom.
Fans were largelydisappointed with this endingand with the “mad queen” arc in general. Despite this, Daenarys the character remains well-loved. Daenerys was a fan favorite for much of the show’s run and was one of the most recognizable and referenced characters on television. The fact that this Fabergé egg was inspired by her is just more evidence of how she has made her mark on art and pop culture forever.
