Tom Holland has portrayed Peter Parker and his wall-crawling alter-ego in five films so far, but his time could be coming to an end soon. Recently, Holland has said that he is treating the upcoming Marvel Studios filmSpider-Man: No Way Homeas the end of a trilogy.
Holland made his exciting debut as Peter Parker in 2016’sCaptain America: Civil War, where the actor was praised for his youthful portrayal as the famous web-slinger. This came right after Disney’s Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures made a deal to collaborate on futureSpider-Manfilms and being able to integrate the character into both respective universes.

Holland, who recently spoke with EW, is describing the highly anticipated December release as a conclusion tohisSpider-Mantrilogy. “We were all treating [‘No Way Home’] as the end of a franchise, let’s say,” Holland claimed. “I think if we were lucky enough to dive into these characters again, you’d be seeing a very different version. It would no longer be the ‘Homecoming’ trilogy. We would give it some time and try to build something different and tonally change the films. Whether that happens or not, I don’t know. But we were definitely treating [‘No Way Home’] like it was coming to an end, and it felt like it.”
The film is looking to build off of the success of 2017’sSpider-Man: Homecomingand 2019’sSpider-Man: Far From Home. Both received much acclaim for their light-hearted, playful tones, andSpider-Man: No Way Homeis feeling like the perfect conclusion to make a well-rounded trilogy. Everything from the inclusion of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, the multiverse that will see the return of characters like Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock and Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin from the Sam RaimiSpider-Mantrilogy, and Tom Hardy’sVenom: Let There Be Carnagepost-credits scenethat teases an exciting introduction (also hinting at the revival of the sinister six) suggest the epic conclusion is shaping up to be one of MCU’s most epic and grand films to date.
With Holland’s contract confirmed to be up afterSpider-Man: No Way Homeand also knowing of Jon Watts' upcoming directing projects such as his new thriller film for Apple TV Plus that willstar Brad Pitt and George Clooneyand his MCUFantastic Fouradaptation, it seems thatSpider-Manmay head in another direction. But again, with the multiverse being introduced and granting filmmakers the opportunity to toy around with the idea of multiple versions of the Spider-Man character, it seems Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige will in some way make Spidey stick around for quite a while. For now, though, fans will have to prepare for the possibility that this could potentially be the last time Holland will appear on screen as the fan-favorite character.
Spider-Man: No Way Home’s castwill also include Zendaya as MJ, Jacob Batalon as Ned, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Jamie Foxx as Electro, J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson, Benedict Wong as Wong, Tony Revolori as Flash Thompson, J.B. Smoove as Julius Dell, and Angourie Rice as Betty Brant.
Spider-Man: No Way Homeis set to hit theaters on December 17th, 2021.
