Crunchyroll, Japanese satellite broadcaster WOWOW and Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan have teamed up to produce the anime adaptation to the best-selling light novel “Bye Bye, Earth” by Tow Ubukata. The announcement came on Wednesday, with news that Crunchyroll would be streaming the upcoming project in more than 200 countries; as well as WOWOW’s platform in Japan.

Author Tow Ubukata recently had another one of his works, “Moonrise”, announced for an anime project earlier this year in August. At this point in time, no additional information about the upcomingBye Bye, Earthanime adaptation is available; however,the word is outregarding the series' production.

Ubukata’sBye, Bye Earthwas created in two parts which were published on Christmas Day, 2000 by Kadokawa Shoten, with art by Yoshitaka Amano. The title was then revivified in 2007 in a Kadokawa Bunko version, with a new four-volume release of the title which ran on until 2008, with the art this time done by Hyung Tae Kim.

The title was also adapted into a manga, with art by Ryū Asahi; announced in December 2019 and published in January 2020, running until July 2022 in Asahi’s Young King Ours magazine. The complete manga ran for four volumes, with Shonengahosha publishing the third volume in September 2021.

The story ofBye Bye, Earthis set on an Earthwhere people take on the form of animals, except for a young girl named Bell, who is the only girl in the world who lacks animalistic characteristics. Armed with her sword, Bell sets out to find other people like her.

The author, Tow Ubukata, who debuted in 1996 as a writer of short stories has written other novels that have inspired film and anime adaptations, like theMardock Scramblenovel series, which were published over the period of May to July 2003.

Other notable works by Ubukata include the anime set in 18th century, pre-revolutionary France with a dark fantasy twist,Le Chevalier D’Eon; as well as theHeroic Ageseries. Anime projects that he has been involved in includeGhost in the Shell: Arise, released in 2013;Psycho Pass 2, released in 2014 and theRWBY: Ice Queendomprojectfrom July this year. He was involved in series composition for each of the aforementioned titles, as well as scriptwriting. Ubukata has won several awards, including the 1996 Kadokawa Sneaker Grand Prize. No other information regarding the anime adaptation ofBye Bye, Earthis known at this time.
