Anyone who plays competitive games long enough will inevitably end up in at least a few matches where they’re hopelessly outmatched. With the latestValorantupdate, however, it’s now easier for players to wave the white flag and surrender when defeat is all but guaranteed.

Theability to surrender was recently added toValorantin its previous update, but it wasn’t without some shortcomings. Namely, it required the entire team to vote in favor of surrendering to call a match, regardless of mode. That’s no longer the case with today’s 1.03 update, as that has changed up the surrender option in a few key ways that makes it easier for teams to utilize it.

As the patch notes Riot Games released this morning reveal, teams in Unrated Mode now only need to get an 80% vote for a surrender vote to pass, instead of a full 100%. Players can also surrender sooner now, as they’re now able to call for a vote after only five rounds instead of the original eight. Additionally, there’s now a new dedicated button in the in-game menu for calling for a surrender vote.

One thing that hasn’t changed, however, is that players inValorant’s Competitive Modewill still need a unanimous vote to surrender. Riot explained that since surrendering affects players’ rankings, it wants to “make sure the team is in full agreement before a decision is made that will negatively impact a player’s rank.”

From the sound of it, these changes should ensure players can spend less time stuck in one-sided matches, without incentivizing them to abandon a game at the first sign of trouble. That said, there are concerns that the option just being there inValorantwill still encourage players to try quitting after just a few setbacks, instead of trying their best to beat the odds and win. Whether or not the changes Riot has made will be enough to keep the player base mostly satisfied remains to be seen.

Besides the changes to the surrender system, the 1.03 update brings with it a fair number of other changes and fixes, with highlights including adjustments made to the Guardian assault rifle andValorant’s Spike Rush mode. The full details can be found on the game’s official website.
